Pseudotropheus Callainos
"Cobalt"

Thank you Cichlid Press and Ad Konings for allowing me to use your pictures.

I was very lucky to find such nicely colored fish.  These fish go from very light blue to the bright blue color.  I only had these little beauties for a couple of months before I decided not to keep the Lake Malawi Cichlids anymore, so I never did get them to breed.  It is difficult to tell males from females in this fish but the males do get larger then the females do.  There is a way called "Venting" (see the link below) to tell males from females but you really need to know what you are doing to try this.  The group of 5 Cobalt's I had where in my 75 gallon community with mostly other Malawi Cichlids.  I did have a Lake Victoria breeding group of Haplochromis Ruby Greens in this same tank and had no problems.  The key to mixing Cichlids is to get them when small and to have lots of hiding places.  When you have adult fish it's much harder to put new fish in with out them getting beat up or even killed.  This is a mouth brooding Cichlid and with similar fish, brooding time is from 14 to 21 days.  This depends on the size of the female and the number of fry she is holding. See my breeding page for info on mouth brooding also see my fry page for basic fry care information.

Adult size: 8.0 cm
