Neolamprologus
Brevis / Sunspot

Thank you Cichlid Press and Ad Konings for allowing me to use your pictures.

This is a great little shell dweller.  They have an interesting appearance with there turned up face.  They look and act like they are better than any other fish. I received these fish via "The Cichlid Exchange" (see links page) on 08/20/99  This is a great community Cichlid as it can take care of its self despite its size.  You should not keep it with really aggressive Cichlids, mine have done well with Julidochromis and some Neolamprologus species.

Tank size: I am raising two new pair, they are in a 5 gallon tank.
Tank Temp: 78 to 82
Tank pH: 8.0
Adult size:  5.5 cm

Breeding Information:

The female gets an enlarged belly and  turns a darker blotchy color, her belly is very pail in color though.  The male also gets darker in color but is more solid. Both male and female protect the spawning site.  They don't seem to protect much of an area around the shell they have spawned in.  The other Brevis seem to know when the fry have hatched because they show a much greater interest in the breeding pairs shell. In a community tank you will of course loose a lot of fry but the bad thing is you might also loose your male and possible your female.  These little guys do not back down and will fight to save there fry.  I tend to remove the shell from my 80 gallon after I see the fry have hatched and replace it with another one.  This way I save my fry and my breeding pair.
