Fulu - Swamps
Haplochromis Porthole

Thank you Gas Station Cichlid for allowing me to use you picture.
(NOTE: I sold these fish on 11/07/99)

This Haplochromis is not as brightly colored as others but it is a nice looking fish.  I have been told that this fish is endangered but I cannot prove that.  This fish must have lots of hiding places for the females as the male is very aggressive towards them..  The females when brooding are kind of touchy, so take care not to stress them or they will spit out there batch even if the fry are not ready.  I had my breeding group of 1M and 3F in a 20 High.   This Haplochromis can be in a community tank but be careful, if the male even thinks that another fish is looking at his females he will fight them. (very possessive about his ladies)

Adult Size: Males 5" or 12.5 cm & Females 3.5" or 8 cm

Breeding Information:

One female has spawned several times and only has about 13 or so fry.  She always has eggs that did not hatch.  The other females have an average of 24 fry per batch so this female either lays to many eggs at one time or picks them up before the male has a chance to fertilize them.  It seems the size of the batch has to so with the size of the female.  The female holds the eggs from 14 to 21 days depending on the size of the female and the size of the batch she is holding.  She will protect her fry for about a week then they are on there own.(see fry page for info on basic fry care)  They can have a batch of fry about every 2 to 3 months, sooner if you strip the fry. (see breeding page for information on Striping a mouth brooder).
