Labeotropheus
Trewavasae "Red top"

Thank you Cichlid Press and Ad Konings for allowing me to use your pictures.

This is a very nice and colorful fish to have.  Trewavasae's make great community fish and it is easy to tell the males from the females.  Females are this OB color (OB = Orange Blotch) pattern and the males are a bright blue with a red Top or Dorsal fin, hence the name Red Top.  This fish is a mouth brooder and  I have had many batches of fry.  This fish will produce around 20 fry per batch and you can tell males from females at birth.  The juvenile males are a dark color with stripes when born.  When they get to about 2" or so they will start to change color.  With most Cichlids, breeding brings out the best color, so it's always a good idea to have both males and females.  My Trewavasae's started breeding at about 2.5" to 3" long. I kept 2 males and 4 females, this also helps keep the males very nicely colored when they have a rival in the tank.

Tank Size: 75 gallon (this is where I had mine but they did very well in a 20 gallon tank)

Adult size:  11.7 cm

Breeding Information:
These are easy to get to breed and as you can see from the pictures above easy to tell males from females.  The females are born with there color the males are a dark color with vertical bands when small.  They get there blue color at about 2.5" to 3" this is about the time they can breed.  They are a mouth brooding species, please see my breeding page for information on mouth brooding.
