Julidochromis
Transcriptus / Zambian - Gombi

Thank you Cichlid Press and Ad Konings for allowing me to use your pictures.

WOW is all I can say about this little Julie.  I have searched for these Julie's for a long time and finally got 6 of them via "The Cichlid Exchange" (see link page)  There is no real set pattern to this fish and from what I have read they only grow to about 8 cm.  Well just to show you that even people that have raised Cichlids still make mistakes I found a Julie on the floor because I didn't put a lid on the tank.

Tank size: 20 gallon long & 80 gallon long both have a breeding pair
Tank Temp: 78 to 80
Tank pH: 8.0 - both tanks
Fish size when adults - 3.5" (8.9 cm) for both males and females.

Breeding Information:

I was stunned when I looked in the tank today (10/16/99) and saw a baby Transcriptus.  I quickly moved the other 3 fish out of the tank.  I have no idea when the fry hatched and so far I have only seen about 10 or so babies.  There is a major size difference in the fry witch leads me to think that there is more than one spawn.  The parent fish are only 2" to 2.5" I have had Julie's breed at this age before but when I really want a fish to spawn it rarely does.  This pair dug a hole under a rock to spawn in.  This is fairly typical of Julidochromis species.  Julie's make great parent fish and allow fry to stay with them until they reach about 1" in size than it's time to move the fry. This has been the case with my Julie Ornatus and Marlieri and I am assuming that the Transcriptus will be the same.
