Iodotropheus Sprengerae
AKA
"Rusty Cichlid"

This is kind of a  plain Cichlid because of the dark color of this fish.  It does get a deep purple color on the sides of the body when its older. This is not a real aggressive Cichlid and does great in a community tank.  I do like the contrast of color between this Cichlid and the Lemon Yellows also with the Cobalt Blue Zebra's and others.  I kept these fish in my 75 gallon community tank and they did very well. This Cichlid is tough to sex but you can try venting (see link below) I keep my tanks at a temp of 78 to 82 and a pH of 8.0.
Adult size:  10.8 cm

Breeding Information:

This is a mouth brooding Cichlid and it does not have very many fry per batch.  With less fry the female can keep the fry in her mouth longer, also when she releases them they will be able to seek protection from there mother for longer.  Some Cichlids have adapted this mouth brooding style in order to better ensure the survival of there fry.  It does however make it a little harder to tell when the female is holding, you need to watch her during feedings to see if she eats or not to tell for sure if she is in fact holding.  Most mouth brooders hold there fry for between 14 and 21 days.  With Rusty's they hold them for 21 days or more.  See breeding page for more info on mouth brooders also check out my fry page for basic fry care.
