This is a really bright and colorful fish that does very well in a community tank. I had them in with my Lake Tanganyika cichlids in my 75 gallon tank and had no problem. The males, like a lot of Haplochromis, are aggressive towards the females when they want to breed. You must have lots of rocks and hiding places for the females. There should be at least 3 or 4 females per male in order to spread the males attention to the females out. I never got these fish to breed because I lost the only male I had. I ordered these from a private breeder and friend in Mich. so I was unable to get any more as he sold his off. This is a mouth brooding species, see my breeding page for information. This fish can be sexed because the males get nice bright colors at a young age and the females stay a very dull color. You can sex the fish by Venting (see link below) if you know what you are doing.
Adult Size: Males 6" or 15 cm & Females 4.5" or 11 cm
