Cyprichromis Leptosoma
"Neon Blue"
Thank you Cichlid Press and
Ad Konings for allowing me to use your pictures.
These fish came to me via a local store (Chris and Carol's living world
pets in Kennewick, WA) and they got them from Wet Thumb Aquatics. (see
links page) I have always loved this genius of Cichlid because they
are a true schooling fish. They have a habit of resting near the
top of the tank with there heads facing down. It looks really neat,
another good thing is this fish does tend to stay towards the top of the
tank. It is best to keep these fish in groups of at least 8 as they
are a schooling fish. There seems to be any color you could
want or combo's of colors you could want with this genius of Cichlid.
They have a sleek shape and are very quick but are not an aggressive fish.
It is best to keep them with Cichlids that are not to aggressive or ones
that like to stay at the bottom of the tank.
Tank size: 20 gallon long
Tank Temp: 78 to 82
Tank pH: 8.0
Adult size: males 4.5" ( 11 cm ) females 4" ( 10 cm )
Breeding information:
I have not bred this species of Cichlid nor have I bred any other Cyprichromis
species. This is a mouth brooding cichlid but has a little different
way of spawning. Most mouth brooders use a flat surface at the bottom
of the tank to breed but not these guys. They stay true to form and
breed near the top of the tank. The male positions himself under
the female so when she releases an egg he can fertilize then she goes below
him to retrieve the fertilized egg. If you have to many other fish
in the tank the egg will be eaten before the female has a chance to get
to it. Keep this in mind if you are planing to bred these fish.
I have never watch the breeding myself but have read and talked with people
about it. From what I understand the fry are released again near
the top of the tank in some floating plants. (good idea to have some) the
fry will join the school in a week or so and the others in the school do
not bother them.
