Aulonocara sp. German Red
Peacock

Thank you Armke's for allowing me to use your picture.

This is the first Peacock that I have tried to keep.  The male of this species has just grand color and I could not pass it up.  I got these fish from a local store (Chris and Carol's Living World Pets, Kennewick WA.) and they got them from Wet Thumb Aquatics (see links page).  It is a good idea to keep several females to each male with this genius of Cichlid.  Lots of rocks are a must so the females have a place to hide from the male when he is on the prowl.  A good community fish but should not be kept with other peacocks as they will cross breed.

Tank size: 15 high (for now until they are larger)
Tank Temp: 78 to 82
Tank pH: 8.0
Adult size: 6" or 15 cm

Breeding information:
This is another of Lake Malawi's mouth brooders. (see my breeding page on mouth brooding) Easy to tell the males from the females in this genius as the males are the only ones that get color.  The females stay a dull silver/gray with some vertical banding. When the male wants to breed he will follow the female and try his darnest to convince her to breed.  This is why you need several females per male so his attention is spread out.
