Altolamprologus Compressiceps
Gold Head / Mutondwe Island

I am looking for a picture of this fish.  I am also trying to make sure of the name.

I ordered 6 of these really nice looking fish from Wet Thumb Aquatics (see links page) through a local store. Relatively peaceful cichlid, but will not hesitate to consume fish small enough to fit into its mouth.  This species, like the Calvus, prefers rock crevices in which to stake out a territory and future spawning site.  These fish have a blue shaded body with a gold head.  No matter what a picture shows, the colors on the Altolamprologus genius are not bright.  The color is a soft tone, which can be brought out but using different backgrounds or decorations.  This is a slow growing genius of fish so do not expect them to be full grown in a year it will be more like 2 or 3 years to get an adult.  When these fish arrived on 05/12/2000 they where in great shape and where about 1.5" long.
Tank size: - 20 gallon long
Tank Temp. - 78 to 82
Tank pH. - 8.0
Adult size:  6" (15 cm) male & 4.5" (11 cm) female

Breeding information:

Substrate spawner.  Female will select a spawning site, usually a small cave or recess in a rock too small for the male to enter.  As the female lays her eggs, the male will lie over the opening of the spawning site and release his sperm to fertilize the eggs. The perimeter of the spawning site is vigorously defended by the male, while the female remains with the eggs until the become free swimming.  At this time the juveniles should be fed live baby brine shrimp.  Spawns may number up to 300 eggs.  (this information was gathered from several different sources)
