Altolamprologus
Calvus Black

Thank you Cichlid Press and Ad Konings for allowing me to use your pictures.

This is such a great looking fish, I have not had any luck breeding this fish.  I did have 4 and I am down to only one, so I guess breeding is out of the question at this point.  I feed this fish flake flake food and cichlid pellets and it seems to be doing great.   This fish loves to eat fry, so if you have breeding fish in a tank and you want to save your fry, move him out. I got these fish online from Armkee's(see links page). I set up a show tank at a local store and the last one of these I had, went to that tank.

Tank size: 75 gallon
Tank Temp: 78 to 82
Tank pH: 8.0
Fish size when adult - Males = 6" (15 cm) & Females = 4" (10 cm)

BREEDING INFO:

Substrate spawner. Female will select a spawning site, usually a small cave or recess in a rock too small for the male to enter.  As the female lays her eggs, the male will lie over the opening of the spawning site and release his sperm to fertilize the eggs.  The perimeter of the spawning site is vigorously defended by the male, while the female remains with the eggs until the young become free swimming.  Upon becoming free swimming, the juvenile should be fed live baby brine shrimp.  Spawns may number up to 300 eggs.  It is hard to tell the males from the females in this species of Cichlid.  There are two ways of telling Male from Female.  The male is larger and has a taller Dorsal fin when adults.  The other way is Venting, see the link below for information on that.
