Lydia Barreto and her students from Puerto Rico celebrating Christmas
Christmas in Brasil
Since Christmas is so near and "in the air" it is worth remembering the beauty of two cities in Rio Grande do Sul which have celebrated Christmas in a traditional, beautiful and extremely creative way. Gramado and Canela are two cities in the mountains who present a real show during Christmas and Easter. All their inhabitants seem to work hard to receive lots of tourists who occupy all their hotels. These are cities with Italians and Germans and they bring into those celebrations many European characteristics and Brazilians as well. Orchestras, choirs, shows and zillions of lights and ornamenting can be enjoyed through December and the beginning of January. It is a real "light show." Canela and Gramado usually host people from the north, northeast and central Brazil. Lots of buses can be seen during this time.

Our City, São Leopoldo, also has a "Book Fair," but it is not so big and important as the one held in Porto Alegre.

Besides all this art and book events the metropolitan area which includes the capital has a busy agenda regarding films, plays, musical shows, dance and other art exhibitions. The newspapers have weekly suggestions of events for all kinds of people.
