Carnival at El Callao
Sabrina Volante from
Venezuela
Carnival in Venezuela is
celebrated during the month of February, forty days before Good Friday.
Carnival has existed in Venezuela since the colonial period. It was celebrated
in Caracas. Today, however, it is taken more seriously in the coastal towns
and other provinces, especially in El Callao.
El Callao was founded in
1853; it was called Caratal. It is a town with multicultural history, where
gold and riches were offered. Carnival was brought to this town by a mixture
of Englishmen, Americans, Frenchmen, and the slaves that were brought into
the country.
The Carnival in El Callao
is known for its "devils." Masks are worn by these "devils" who are very
impulsive during the festivities.
Carnival in La Chimana
María Alejandra
Pacheco from Venezuela
In my country, we have five
days to enjoy Carnival. We always go to the beaches, but we have a special
beach called La Chimana where we like to go to celebrate during Carnival.
The special thing about our
Carnival is that we celebrate with a lot of balloons. But maybe you will
ask me, "Why balloons?" Maybe you are thinking of balloons with air. No,
these balloons are filled with water. It is really fun, but it's a llittle
dangerous, too, because some people put the balloons into the freezer until
the water inside the balloons freezes, and then throw them at the people.
It is a problem, but we always enjoy our Carnival games very much.
