George
McGowan was born in Bethesda,
Maryland on March 10th,
1948. He began his football career
|
|
while at high school in California. After high school
and junior college, McGowan continued his football
|
|
career with Kansas
University.
Playing as a receiver, McGowan had a record year with the Orange-
|
|
Bowl-bound
Jayhawks, contributing 32 receptions for 592
yards and five touchdowns. In his final year
|
|
at Kansas
University, he was
moved to the defensive back position. After a brief stint with the
NFL ,
|
|
the Edmonton Eskimos signed him in 1971. His
eight year career with the Eskimos produced record
|
|
statistics. In 1973 and 1975 he was the leader in the
west with the most number of pass receptions
|
|
with 81 and 98 respectively. McGowan surpassed the
1,000 yard pass receiving mark three times in
|
|
his
eight years, in 1972 with 1,014 yards and 11 touchdowns, in 1973 with
1,123 yards and 9
|
|
touchdowns and in 1975 with 1,472 and 8 touchdowns. He
still maintains the CFL record for the
|
|
second highest pass receptions in a regular season game
with 15 receptions for 249 yards.

George
McGowan won many awards and honours throughout
his career including CFL All-Star three
|
|
times, Western All-Star three times, and won the Schenley Most Outstanding Player Award in 1973.
|
|
McGowan
played in five Grey Cup games in eight years with the Eskimos and was on
the winning end
|
|
two times. McGowan retired from CFL action in
1978.
