In the 63 Grey Cup games since 1946, the West has won it 32 times, the East 31 times.

Of those 32 Western Grey Cup victories, the team finishing in first place has won it 23 times, the second place team 5 times, and the third place team 4 times.

Moreover, the first place team (from either Division) has won the cup 42 times, with the Western team having a 23-19 edge.  The second place team has won the cup 16 times, with the East holding an 11-5 lead.  The third place team has won it only 5 times, with the Western division winning 4 times, and the East winning it once.

Interestingly, only the 1970 Montreal Alouettes have won the cup for the East while finishing third, while the Western third place team had never won the cup prior to 1989, when Saskatchewan won it.  BC has won it twice after finishing third, first in 1994, and again in 2000.  Also in 2000, the BC Lions became the first team to win the cup after posting a losing record in the Regular Season with an 8-10 record.  Somewhat surprisingly, the Calgary Stampeders repeated the feat in 2001.  In 2005, the Edmonton Eskimos became the third (fourth?) Western team to win the cup while finishing third, defeating the Montreal Alouettes 38-35 in overtime in possibly the greatest Grey Cup game ever!

HEAD-TO-HEAD:

In Head-to-head match-ups, the West holds a 20-10 lead whenever the two 1st-Place teams meet.  When 1st in the West meets 2nd in the East, they've won it 3 times and lost 5.  Amazingly, the 3rd-place team in the East has never played the 1st-place team from the West in the Grey Cup!  In fact, only one Eastern 3rd-place team has played in the Grey Cup -- Montreal in 1970 – winning it 23-10 over the third-place Calgary Stampeders.

When the 2nd-Place team from the West plays, the East appears to have a distinct advantage; second-place Western teams have won 5 Grey Cups, 2 against the 1st-place team, and 3 vs. the 2nd-place team from the East.

The 3rd-place Western team has beaten the 1st-place Eastern team twice, and 2nd-place Eastern teams twice.
