A movie review by Balaji Balasubramaniam
| Cast: | Mammootty, Hamsavardhan, Leena, Charulatha, Ramesh Khanna, Charlie |
| Music: | Yuvan Shankar Raja |
| Direction: | J.Suresh |
The senior and junior are Santosh(Mammootty) and Shakti(Hamsavardhan), two Tamils working and living in Malaysia. They are roommates and send money back home to their families. Shakti falls in love with Indra(Leena) but is sure that Santosh would frown upon this. So he and his friends sow the seeds of love in Santosh's heart with a fake greeting card. Unfortunately, circumstances make Santosh think that it is Indra who sent him the card and so he falls in love with her too.
There is nothing particularly interesting about the romances of either Mammootty or Hamsavardhan. Both follow the standard trajectory of love at first sight followed by unspoken love and alternate between uninteresting and plain silly (the director actually has Mammootty on the floor searching for Lena's strand of hair!). Charlie's mistake in the target of Mammootty's affections is funny for a while but it soon gets repetitive. Charulatha's late introduction and her blatant attempts to woo Hamsavardhan do nothing to increase our interest.
The director seems to think that showing us the sights in Malaysia alone is enough to keep our attention diverted from the uninteresting romances in the movie. So we get the feeling of sitting in a tour bus in Malaysia as the camera explores every nook and corner of the country under the guise of following Mammootty, Hamsavardhan and Leena around. Though the cinematography is impressive and some of the locales are attractive, many of the sights are already familiar from song sequences in recent movies.
Just about the only good thing about both the romances being equally uninteresting is that we are never sure as to who Leena is going to be united with in the end. Though the characters are not likeable enough for us to care one way or the other, the director does do a good job of keeping us guessing about the way the love triangle will be resolved. The final outcome too has been seen before but the approach he takes to reach it is definitely surprising and quite new to Tamil cinema.
It must've been the free trip to Malaysia that tempted Mammootty to accept this movie. The actor, who is a master at understated romances, looks like a fish out of water as he stumbles in his romance with Leena. Hamsavardhan does what is needed. Leena looks slim and pretty and performs creditably while Charulata makes it obvious right from her first appearance that she was added solely to increase the glamour. Yuvan Shankar Raja, who made an impression with Nandhaa, is disappointing here.
