Patxi Idoate

(cover of Euskal Abizenak no. 4)

THE ARTIST: patxi idoate

A painter born in Zizur Menor, Navarre. His style approaches abstract expresionism, with themes centered on nature and landscapes. He works in collage —the technique he likes most— both in paper and wood, as well as acrylic oil and watercolor. His pictorial career is reflected in numerous prizes, together with national and international exhibitions. The Guinness Book of Records organization is now considering the inclusion of one of Idoate's murals, measuring 465 m², as the Largest Indoor Mural in the world.

THE SURNAME: idoate

About his surname he tells us: «My father was born in Sagüés and my grandfather in Esparza de Galar. Whatever the case, I suppose the origin of the surname will be in the town of Idoate. As Florencio Idoate (the former archivist of the AGN) told me, all of us with this surname are family; we come from the same branch, from Uztarroz in the Roncal valley».

THE PAINTING: idoate

«In order to paint this picture I needed a reference. I have based it on the meaning of my surname (idoi= lagoon; ate= mountain pass, passage), because that's, in effect, what I am doing: mountains, valleys and passages».
