.The cover of every newsletter is the work of a prominent artist with a Basque surname. They are created through a specific commission to illustrate our publication, representing in these covers a motif that evokes their surnames. These covers can be seen in the EUSKAL ABIZENAK artists’ gallery.
The MUNDUA section includes a series of elaborate reports that introduce us to the surname systems of other nations and cultures in the world.
This section contains diverse linguistic aspects regarding Basque surnames, such as their correct spelling in the Basque language, their variants and their compounds. Etymology and probable meanings are rigorously analyzed, rejecting many previous interpretations published elsewhere. This section also includes a study of the current distribution of the surname throughout the world.
This section looks at the most important figures and branches that a surname possesses, without their necessarily being from the same lineage or sharing a common origin. It includes photos.
In SORTETXEA there is an overview of the history of the house, farmhouse, neighborhood or town from which the surname originated. It is, at the same time, a history of its occupants and inhabitants. It includes photos and situational maps.
The Basque people, as a result of their ancestral origins and ancient sovereignty, enjoyed in many cases universal (or general) nobility recognized in several different kingdoms. For the greatest density of nobles in Europe was concentrated in the Basque Country-Navarre; nobles for whom it was sufficient to demonstrate their Basque origins (through an original Basque house or farmhouse) to claim noble status. Due to this, our archives are full of records about the nobility, and these are indexed and published by surname in this section.
A false but extensive myth among popular knowledge must be done away with: coats or arms do not correspond to surnames, but only to some of their branches, houses or lineages, and even on occasion to only some of their members. For this reason, in this section all known coats of arms for every surname are shown, but at the same time clarifying to which branch or house they belong.
