THE ARTIST: pepe ansoain

He studied Arts and Crafts in Irun, receiving night classes in drawing from Gaspar Montes. His style approaches impresionism, in a rustic atmospheric painting in which he brings to light again the old elements of daily use which have fallen in disuse. His works have been exhibited in Madrid (Arcadia, Carlos Herraiz and ABC galleries), Hondarribia (Susperregui), Elizondo (Auza) and Iruñea-Pamplona (Trade Show 1999). In addition, he participates as a judge in diverse painting contests.

THE SURNAME: ansoain

He tells us the following about his surname: «I know that it is a Basque surname that takes its name from the town of Antsoain. My great-grandfather was from Astrain; he was in the Cuban war (1898) and returned to Navarre, dying from the 1914 influenza. Their descendants passed on to Larraga and Lerín. Now we are quite a lot of people with this surname, but we are all family. We do not know other Ansoains».

THE PAINTING: ansoain

«The only reference that I have of my surname is the town of Antsoain, and I have chosen the porch of its church as the most representative element, a place that has always been there and through which we all have passed. It has allowed me, in addition, to not leave my style».
