THE SURNAME: manterola
Asked about the origin of his surname he admits to not knowing it. «As far as I know, my father, my grandfather, my great-grandfather … were all from Orio. I know some other Manterolas in Zumaia (the painter Valentín) and in Pamplona (those of the bakeries and a teacher of Fine Arts called Pedro). Furthermore, there is very near to here a neighborhood called Manterola.»
THE PAINTING: manterola
«In this painting I represent my surname Manterola. My grandfather died when I was four, and the only references I have of him are from some photographs. Going back in time I only managed to get as far back as my great-grandfather, who harpooned the last whales caught in Orio, according to some verses sung by Benito Lertxundi. This is what I wanted to create: my great-grandfather with the whale and my grandfather in a closer plane. And I did it using muted colors, almost in black and white, because it's not a living memory or something I have close to hand.»
