THE ARTIST: anton eguiguren
Zumaia, Gipuzkoa (1946-). A professional in the world of photography, infography and advertising, Eguiguren has painted since he was a child —and is self-taught— although he only made a name for himself a few years ago. He is a colorist painter, whose work is characterized by clear and strong colors. He has exhibited it in Bilbao (the Sabin-Etxea and Tapelia Restaurant), Madrid (the Herraiz gallery) and Zarautz (the Bale-harri gallery). Moreover, since 2001 he has had a permanent exhibition in the Hotel Landarte in Zumaia.
THE SURNAME: eguiguren
Questioned about the origin of his surname he tells us: «My Eguiguren part comes from Aizarna; at least my grandfather and my great-grandfather were born there. My grandfather was the first-born, but as he studied veterinary science he left the farmhouse and went to live in Azpeitia, where my father was born». Whatever the case he does not sign his pictures with the surname, but with his first name: «Eguiguren implies the family, Anton however is more personal».
THE PAINTING: eguiguren
«I was born in Zumaia, and I feel very Zumaian. That's why I have chosen Zumaia as the motif for this picture. I could have painted Azpeitia or Aizarna, but that does not say anything to me».
