Your wedding party can be as big or small as you want it to be. Importantly you should choose people you can trust and feel comfortable with. Do not bow to mother's pressure to have your cousin as a bridesmaid if she simply is not suitable. Traditionally there are several bridesmaids and only a best man, but generally the wedding party is selected in gender pairs. One rule of thumb is one bridesmaid/groomsman for every 50 guests, however more than 2 or 3 attendants each for the bride and groom is uncommon. It is traditional to ask siblings to attend you, but it is just as common to choose friends. Perhaps choose one of each to keep everyone happy. Don't let distance stop you from having your best friend attend you on your wedding day, just be aware that they may not be able to assist as much with the pre-wedding planning as someone who lives in the locality. Also do not worry how the pairs will look together, for most of the day/night they will be separated. Junior bridesmaids, flowergirls and pageboys are traditionally chosen from relatives. As soon as you decide on the numbers of your wedding party, get out there and ask them. Sometimes monetary problems or other conflicts may prevent one or more of your initial choices from accepting the offer. You need to ensure you have ample time to organise a replacement. Also make sure each of the attendants is aware of what is expected of them and what cost is involved, so that they may accept or decline on this basis.
