Tips for Reducing the Cost of Your Wedding

Many say money is no object when it comes to their wedding. However unless you are one of the privileged few, or you intend to pay off your wedding debt for the rest of your life, we all need  find ways to make that elusive dollar stretch a little further.

  • Use wedding advisors and co-ordinators. They have industry contacts and should be able to find you the best deals, just ask.

  • Instead of a traditional reception venue, consider a community centre, surf club, golf club or church hall for your reception.

  • Try the discontinued rack at the bridal salon. The gowns are perfectly good but are just not this years models.

  • Another popular trend is the purchase of pre-loved gowns and they generally costs less than half the original price. Some businesses even specialise in the sale of pre-loved gowns.

  • Most bridal salons offer lingerie, slips, bras and shoes, however these items are often overpriced so consider looking elsewhere.

  • Get married in the morning or in the winter months (try summer in tropical areas).  You will save a considerable amount of money.

  • If you are prepared to sacrifice some of your time on certain items, the do it yourself option is always available for wedding transport, wedding cake, catering, photography and videography, reception venue and bridal gown. But be warned, sometimes the do it yourself option does not always provide the results you would desire and often places too much pressure and workload on yourself and your family.

  • Don't go broke buying flowers. Provide your florist with a budget and they should provide practical floral solutions with the dollars you have to spend.

  • Consider using a DJ instead of a band if cash is tight.

  • Keep the guest list as small as possible. The less mouths to feed, the cheaper it is. Click here for tips on reducing your guest list.

  • Supply your own alcohol if possible.

  • Don’t drive up catering costs by having seafood.

  • Ask your reception site about guaranteed numbers.  You might still have to pay for 100 guests even though only 80 showed up.
