Who First? Traditionally the man asked the woman's father for her hand in marriage and his consent formalised the engagement. If you are a traditionalist this is fine, however it is more common for the couple to announce the engagement to both sets of parents, preferably in person, but if this is not possible call them with the good news. If either of you have a child from a previous marriage or relationship ensure they are told of the engagement straight away. Your children do not want here the news from someone else first!! Spreading the News Now it is time to inform family and friends of the news. There is no set protocol at this stage, tell everybody. Get on the phone, make an announcement at work, send E-Mails (include a photo if you like) or perhaps time the announcement for an occasion when family and friends are together. A traditional and effective way of making the announcement is via the personal columns of the local daily newspaper. Traditionally this announcement is made by the parents of the bride, and the notice may also include a photo of the bride or an official engagement photo of the couple. The format is up to you but here is a common example.
The engagement announcement can be listed in the newspaper on any day of the week, with the exception of Sunday, however Saturday is the preferred day. You might also like to let friends and family interstate know the news by listing the announcement in the relevant daily paper. Your local newsagent should be able to assist you with the registration of your newspaper announcement, otherwise contact the local newspaper via their General Enquiries number to see how the listing can be made. Another great way to inform everybody is by creating your own web-page. If you have access to the internet you also have the ability to create your own web-page for free. Most ISP's have free web space allocated for their subscribers, simply enquire or visit their home page for details. Most free web-page services also provide easy to use tools to help you create your web-page/s and you will be online in no time at all. All you need to to then is E-Mail the web address to all your family and friends.
