Debutante Ball | |||
To some the debutante ball may be an outdated and anachronistic institution, but thankfully the debutante ball still survives. The Ball marks the "coming out" of a young women as she makes her formal entrance into society. Even these days the girls still dress in white silk ball gowns, and the boys dress up in tuxedos, vests and dinner suits. The Debutante Ball has even made some concessions to the changing times, and you will find yourself mixing waltzes and twists, with some more modern dance routines (I use the word 'routine' very loosely) to the Vengaboys or Madison Avenue. |

Tips & Tricks Each spring generally marks debutante season, and your school and debutante ball organisers will generally give you more than enough information and preparation for the night. However we will attempt to provide a few tips that should help make a most memorable night. 1) A quick debutante ball checklist. For the Girls:
For the boys:
2) Choosing your date. Now lets see, you need to find a male willing to parade around in a tux or dinner suit, and they must also be charming, handsome and a fairly good dancer. Additionally he has to get along with your family as parents and grandparents are sure to attend. Good Luck. 3) The Proceddings. Two by two, the couples will descend the stairs and into the ball room. Cameras will flash, as each couple are announced to the audience. The first dance will be announced and it's off to the dance floor. Your dance teachers will ensure you are well prepared for this dance, but no doubt there will be a few laughs as couples turn the wrong way and feet are stepped on. The parents on the other hand will be trying to catch every move, and between bouts of clapping will be taking numerous photos or operating video cameras. Next it's time for the girls to dance with Dad (or step dad) and the boys to dance with mum (or step mum). Dinner will generally be served now, followed by the obligatory speeches. The table will be set in a formal manner. If you are unfamiliar with the formal way of doing things, refer to our formal table and formal dining etiquette pages. The night will kick off again with many songs and dances to cater for all tastes. Eventually you will arrive at debs' second and final set dance, and the crowd will clear for the debs' and their partners. Traditionally the dance will involve moving around in a circle to new partners, and ending with the original partners back together. The last dance will be a slow tearjerker for the deb partners to get up close and personal. With the formal dances finished the DJ will crank up the music up, and you can dance the night away, head off home, or more than likely change into something a little more comfortable and head off to the after deb party. 4) Why is the Deb so special?
