Tamil Nadu and Saurashtra have been the two powerhouses in Indian domestic cricket that have also stood the test of times. The ongoing Vijay Hazare Trophy will be an opportunity for both these sides to add another feather to the cap that is already well rich with many remarkable achievements.
They will now be facing off against each other in what will arguably be the toughest match for both these sides in the tournament so far. Not only this match will be the toughest, it will also be the most important one considering that the winner will advance to the finale and the losing side will bow out of the competition.
Tamil Nadu vs Saurashtra, the second semi-final of the Vijay Hazare Trophy 2021, is to be played at KL Saini Cricket Ground, Jaipur on 24th December 2021.
Tamil Nadu are having a dream run in India's domestic circuit and most of that can be attributed to the sheer amount of experience they have in their team. A good number of players from their camp have rich experience of playing in IPL and those who do not have that, they have featured in high-pressure local tournaments like Tamil Nadu Premier League.
We saw Tamil Nadu deal with the pressure brilliantly in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy finale and saw that experience come to their rescue in the ongoing Vijay Hazare Trophy too as they remped past Karnataka in a splendid manner. Although they finished their group stage campaign being at the top, they failed to finish that with a flourish as they lost both of their last two group matches.
Coming into the playoffs, Tamil Nadu had a lot of unanswered questions and they answered those brilliantly with a terrific win over Karnataka. Batting first, Tamil Nadu rode on a superb century by N Jagadeesan who ensured a tall total for Tamil Nadu. Continuing to build on his solid form, Shahrukh Khan then made all the difference as he slammed 79 runs off just 39 deliveries, thereby taking Tamil Nadu's score to 354, which at one time seemed to be more like 320.
On the bowling front as well, Tamil Nadu were near flawless. The scoreboard cushion did help their bowlers bowl with confidence, but the accuracy with which the bowlers executed their plans was perfect. Picking up three and four wickets respectively, Washington Sundar and Ragupathy Silambarasan were the picks of their bowling, and will hold the key in this upcoming match as well.
On paper, Tamil Nadu always had a terrific side and the only piece that was missing before their win over Karnataka - their form, is now back in place as well. If Tamil Nadu are able to play to their potential in this upcoming contest, they should sail through to a clean win in this upcoming contest.
Narayan Jagadeesan, Manimaran Siddharth, Sandeep Warrier, V Shankar, Shahrukh Khan, Baba Indrajith, Dinesh Karthik, B Aparajith, R Silambarasan, Washington Sundar, Ravisrinivasan S Kishore.
Just like Tamil Nadu, Saurashtra have been one of the most successful domestic teams in India over the years and will want to make their knockouts appearance count this time. They have been guilty of not converting the knockouts chances into the titles and a win here might well make things a lot more easier for them.
Saurashtra had a terrific run in the Group stage and were, in fact, the only side from the Elite Group to finish with five wins in five matches. Coupled with the 20 points, they had a terrific net run rate of 1.461, which just illustrates how dominant they were in the group stage. The same was on display in the quarter-final too as they just rampaged past Vidharbha in a rather one-sided contest.
Bowling first on a decent wicket, their fast bowlers proved to be a significant hurdle for Vidarbha batsmen as the likes of Jaydev Unadkat and Chetan Sakariya bowled miserly and picked up important wickets in the process. Also, the likes of Chirag Jani, Prerak Mankad, D Jadeja, and Yuvraj Chudasama provided excellent support to their top bowlers as they bundled Vidarbha out for a total of just 150 runs. Mankad and Vasavada then stuck together a good partnership to guide their side home.
All in all, Saurashtra have been in terrific form and will be brimming with confidence. On paper, however, their batting does look a little too inexperienced. If they are able to handle pressure and the batsmen can get going against an experienced Tamil Nadu bowling unit, Saurashtra will be in business big time.
Chetan Sakariya, Harvik Desai, Jaydev Unadkat, Yuvraj Chudasama, Vishvaraj Jadeja, Samarth Vyas, Prerak Mankad, Sheldon Jackson, Dharmendrasinh Jadeja, Chirag Jani, Arpit Vasavada.
This is a high-pressure game and runs on the board will matter. While batting second will allow the chasing team to adapt to the target, the move can backfire if the team batting first ends up scoring more than the par score - just as it happened with Karnataka in the quarter-final. Also, we expect the surface to slow down a bit with the passage of the day. For that reason, we expect the captain winning the toss to bat first here.

Unlike the other venue at Jaipur, this one happened to be a high-scoring venue, largely because of short boundaries and a true surface. While there was a good amount of assistance for the bowlers bowling with the new ball, batsmen once set could take their chances. We expect something similar in the upcoming match as well and playing out the powerplay with the least damage will be the aim of both these sides. Fast bowlers are expected to be more successful than the spinners. Considering that, the team batting first should be looking to put a total of at least 285 runs on the board.

This is an important match and two of the biggest teams in Indian domestic structure makes it an even bigger contest. Only one of Tamil Nadu and Saurashtra will be able to get through and handling pressure will be a key factor. On the basis of form, both sides are evenly placed and it is hard to separate the two. On paper, however, Tamil Nadu have more firepower in the bank and that can be useful in this crunch game. Also, they played their last game here at the same venue and the familiarity with the surface is likely to add to their advantage. Considering that and the other reasons stated above, betting on a Tamil Nadu win should be the way to go here.
Dinesh Karthick is the most experienced batsmen amongst the two sides and will have a lot hanging on his shoulders for Tamil Nadu. He has a knack of delivering in big games and this might well be the match for him to make his mark - again. Also, he looked in terrific form in the last two matches before getting dismissed and looks good for a big one in the upcoming match too. Bet on Dinesh Karthick to score a personal score of at least fifty runs here.
Washington Sundar may not be the most flamboyant spinner playing the game, but he certainly gets the job done. He picked up three important wickets in the previous match and can be a handful in the upcoming match too. Given the form he is in, a bet on Sundar to pick up at least a couple of wickets seems to be a pretty lucrative option.
