How often have you seen two international sides taking on each other without even a break of a day. Well! Such are the times with cricket schedules so jam-packed. After an anti-climatic meeting in the first match of the series, Australia and Sri Lanka are set to take on each other in the second match of the series right a day after the conclusion of the first one.
With not even a day or rest to ponder upon the proceedings of the first match, the teams will have to be well-prepared and well-equipped right from the word go. Sri Lanka looked absolutely clueless in the first match and will have a big point to prove in the second one. The match between the two sides is to be played at the R Premadasa Cricket Ground, Colombo on 9th June 2022.
It's been a while since Sri Lanka started rebuilding their side and although they have progressed, the progress has been far from satisfactory. They have far too often been guilty of losing from the positions of strength and that is exactly what happened in the last game as well.
At one moment, they were cruising through towards 180, if not more, with Charith Asalanka and Pathum Nissanka batting well. Just when it was time to accelerate and build on the platform that was laid, Sri Lanka lost the momentum, losing wickets in heap and were eventually reduced to 128.
It was an even more embarrassing performance with the ball as they not only failed to pick up a wicket, they even struggled to create chances. Barring Maheesh Theekshana and Chamika Karunaratne, none of their bowlers looked economical enough. They would want to work on that in the following match.
On paper, Sri Lanka have a decent side and the advantage of playing at home does buff up their team. Having said that, they would still have to play to their potential to challenge Australia. They would want their senior players to take responsibility and take the team forward and if that happens, Sri Lanka will be in business big time.
Pathum Nissanka, Danushka Gunathilaka, Charith Asalanka, Kusal Mendis, Bhanuka Rajapaksa, Dasun Shanaka, Wanidu Hasaranga, Chamika Karunaratne, PVD Chameera, Maheesh Theekshana, Nuwan Thushara.
Australia have not played much ever since their World T20 win but they have certainly looked a different side ever since that tournament commenced. With almost all their players performing, they are proving to be a difficult side to beat and it was exactly the same in their first outing of the series against Sri Lanka.
Playing away from home in conditions they have not always enjoyed, Australia were fantastic right throughout. Bowling first on a slowish wicket, Australian bowlers struggled to make an impact in the power-play but once the ball got older, they bounced back with a bang. At one moment, they would have been staring at the total of at least 180 to chase down, but managed to keep them down to 128. Mitchell Starc and Josh Hazlewood were fantastic in the back-end as they together picked 7 wickets at the expense of just 42 runs.
Aaron Finch hasn't fired big in Australian colors since a long time and didn't look at his best in IPL either. However, he was at his fluent best in this match as he was the major contributor in Australia's chase. Australia hunted down the total in just 14 overs with David Warner and Aaron Finch both scoring remarkable fifties.
The T20 World Cup win has certainly imbibed a lot of confidence among the side. Besides, with most of their players having an excellent run of form, they look a threatening unit on paper. Perhaps the only thing they might be looking up to is to include a finger-spinner in their playing eleven. Other than that, the Aussies have a terrific all-conditions unit and getting past them could prove to be a might difficult task.
Aaron Finch, David Warner, Mitchell Marsh, Glenn Maxwell, Steven Smith, Marcus Stoinis, Matthew Wade, Ashton Agar, Jhye Richardson, Kane Richardson, Josh Hazlewood.
This is an important match for the two sides with the series hinging on the result of this match. A win for Australia will seal the fate of the series, allowing them an opportunity to try something new in the third match. A win for Sri Lanka, however, will bring things back nicely in balance. Although Sri Lanka do have home advantage, they have not been able to utilize that effectively. Australia, on the other hand, have thrived in these conditions and will be a big threat to deal with up next as well. Considering how the two sides have played and their team combinations on paper, getting past Australia would be a challenging ask. Bet on Australia to emerge on top here in this match as well.
