The tournament that started with a massive fan-following is slowly but certainly losing it charm. We are not even midway into the Hundred, but the focus is now shifting from the Hundred to the bigger tournaments. The preparations for the World T20 have already begun for most of the sides and the Hundred is losing its England majors to the test series between England and India.
Up next in the Hundred, Welsh Fire are set to take on Oval Invincibles in a match that will define the top half of the points table. At the moment, both sides are fighting it out in the mid-table battles and the winner of this match will likely rise to occupy one of the top two slots.
The match between the two sides is to be played at The Oval Cricket Ground, London on Monday, 2nd August 2021.
Oval Invincibles may be placed at the fourth spot on the ladder, but they are performed nowhere close to how they would have wanted to. They started off a strong win over Manchester Originals but then lost their way. With a loss and a wash-out behind them already, Oval Invincibles will need to register a win here if they want to stay inside the top four slots.
The Invincibles currently have three points to their name with a net run-rate of 0.099. They have featured in two completed matches and have won one and lost one. Oval Invincibles do have a side well-suited for the shortest format of the game, but their consistency will always be questioned, largely because of the set of players they have.
Even though the Invincibles have some of the fiercest strikers of the cricket ball, they struggled to score even a par total in their most recent match. Batting first on a decent wicket, they managed to put on a total of just 127 runs as none of their batsmen managed to score freely against a measured bowling attack. Jason Roy did score a fifty, but his knock was a little too slow to make any impact whatsoever. Had it not been for a 34-run knock from Tom Curran down the order, the Invincibles would have scored a lot less.
The likes of Will Jacks, Colin Ingram, and Laurie Evan all failed to get into double digits as the Invincibles struggled to get a partnership going. Their bowlers did well to make a match out of it, but a total of 127 was a little too low to be defended against a power-packed batting unit. Sunil Narine, Saqib Mahmood, and Jordan Clark all bowled well, but the rest of the bowlers were a little too expensive for their liking.
On paper, Oval Invincibles have a decent side, but they do lack some consistent performers. The likes of Colin Ingram and Will Jacks were not as consistent in the T20 Blast and they would want to do a lot better. To add to that, they have a part-time batsman in Sunil Narine at the top who adds to the inconsistency. Having said that, Jason Roy can be a threat for any bowling attack and you can easily bet on him to be the best batsman of the day for the Invincibles.
On their days, the Invincibles can even beat the best in the business, but when it is not, they'll struggle to even put up a fight. They'll be hoping that they manage to get things right in this all-important upcoming contest and if they do, beating them is going to be difficult.
Jason Roy, Will Jacks, SP Narine, Colin Ingram, Jordan Clark, Sam Billings, Laurie Evans, Tom Curran, Tabraiz Shamsi, Reece Topley, Saqib Mahmood.
Welsh Fire are placed just one spot above Oval Invincibles, but they have done a lot better the latter. Not only have they scored a win more than the Invincibles, but they have also looked more equipped and a more settled team. Having said that, with Jonny Bairstow leaving them to play for England, things will certainly change for them. It remains to be seen how much of an impact does his absence has, but it will be there - that's a certainty.
Up until now, Welsh Fire have played three matches and have won two. The two wins that they scored came in their first two matches and they are coming off a deflating loss at the hands of Manchester Originals in the last encounter. As it stands, they have four points with a net run rate of 0.201. A win here will take them to the second spot on the ladder and that is exactly what they'll be aiming for.
Welsh Fire's vulnerabilities with the ball were all out in the open as they allowed Manchester Originals to chase down a decent total of 150 runs with remarkable ease. Having said that, the Originals will not be too concerned yet as those bowlers did remarkably well for then in the first two matches. With the bat, the absence of Jonny Bairstow was telling as Welsh Fire could never get the momentum going at the top.
Even without Jonny Bairstow, however, Welsh Fire do have a decent batting unit, but executing things to perfection will be the key. The likes of Tom Banton and Glenn Phillips have been far from their best and now is the high time to come good. The presence of multiple versatile all-rounders in Matt Critchley, James Neesha, and Ryan Higgins ensure that they have enough firepower in the bank without compromising with the bowling.
The bowlers have done pretty well in the season so far and they'd like to prove that their performance in the last match was more of an anomaly than a norm. Welsh Fire have a terrific team that will be hungry to bounce back to the winning ways. If they are able to play to their on-paper potential, beating them is going to be incredibly difficult.
Tom Banton, Josh Cobb, Ben Duckett, GD Phillips, A Leus du Plooy, James Neesham, MJJ Critchley, Ryan Higgins, Qais Ahmad, David Payne, Matt Milnes.

Given the situation and the positions of the two sides on the point table, this is an important game, to say the least. Both sides are coming off losses in their respective last matches and bouncing back to winning ways will be their utmost priority. This match has plenty riding on it and a cracker of a contest is on the cards. Considering the two sides and their respective on-paper combinations, Welsh Fire appear to be a better side, even without Jonny Bairstow. Considering that and the other above-stated factors, betting on a Welsh Fire win should be the way to go here.
