With just about a week of cricket to go in the league stage of the Super Smash 2021, things are getting extremely tight in the tournament. The top of the points table looks pretty tight with Canterbury Kings, Northern Districts, Wellington Firebirds, and Auckland Aces still fighting to get that top spot and the next few matches are going to be very important for all these sides.
Up next in the tournament, Northern Knights are set to take on Wellington Firebirds in a match that could very well make things more interesting at the top. A win for Wellington Firebirds will open the points table once again whereas a win for the Districts will leave the competition more for the second and the third spot.
The match between the two sides is to be played at Cobham Oval (New), Whangarei on 16th January 2021.
Contrary to how their form has been in the longer format of the game, Northern Districts have absolutely been smashing their opponents in the Super Smash 2021 thus far. They have always had an immaculately balanced side as far as the shortest version of the game is concerned and their depth has truly helped them out here despite the absence of the star players.
As it currently stands on the ladder, Northern Districts are placed at the top of the table with five wins and one loss from seven matches. They have 22 points to their name coupled with an incredible net run rate of 0.725, which just shows how dominant they have been. A win here will further cement their supremacy at the top and that is exactly what they will be aiming for.
Northern Districts are coming off a massive 19-run win over Central Stags, a win that may not look massive by the quantum of margin, but it certainly was given the way the match panned out. Colin de Grandhomme was absolutely fantastic as he single-handedly took the game away from the hands of Central Districts before their bowlers sealed the deal.
On paper, Northern Knights have a terrifically balanced side that just proved their strength and depth in their last match. Because of their form and the way they played in their last match, they will be brimming with confidence. If they do not happen to be complacent and are able to play to their potential, getting past them is going to be incredibly difficult.

Wellington Firebirds may not have had the kind of start they were looking for in the 2021 edition of the Super Smash, they are finally back into the contention. The defending champions have actually been one of the most consistent sides in the New Zealand domestic circuit and it was surprising to see them languish near the bottom of the points table for so long.
As it currently stands on the points table, Wellington Firebirds are placed at the third spot with four wins in seven matches, aggregating to 16 points and a win here will not change their position. Having said that, it will certainly increase the gulf between them and the fourth-placed Auckland Aces, who are currently at the fourth spot. The Firebirds would also want to improve their net run rate, which currently is -0.039.
Wellington Firebirds last played a match in the competition almost a week ago wherein they rampaged past Central Stags by two wickets in a high scoring match. Chasing a total of 227, they looked out of the game after the start they had, but thanks to a terrific knock by Michael Bracewell, they ended up winning the match with one ball to spare. Bracewell played an unbeaten 65-ball 141-run knock to guide his side to an important win.
On paper, Wellington Firebirds too have an exceptional side that has depth in the batting department without actually compromising with the bowling variety. The likes of Jamie Gibson and Logan van Beek are pretty good with the bat and come in to bat at number seven and eight respectively. They have not been consistent with their execution up until now and if they are able to get that right, they will certainly be in business.
Finn Allen, Tim Robinson, Michael Bracewell, Troy Johnson, Rachin Ravindra, James Neesham, Nathan Smith, Logan van Beek, Peter Younghusband, Ben Sears, Hamish Bennett.
Although the last match here was won by the team batting first, that result had little to do with the toss. In fact, the surface here is expected to get better as the match progresses. Besides, knowing what to chase in batting friendly conditions is always a major advantage. Considering that, expect the captain winning the toss to elect to field first.

This is a new venue where there isn't a long history associated with this venue. Having said that, we have already seen a match happen here and given that this match will be the second of the day on the surface, there shouldn't be much uncertainty surrounding the surface. The short boundaries and quick outfield will ensure that batsmen get value for their shots. Also, the surface is likely to stay true throughout with batting likely to get easier. The team batting first would want to post a total of at least 170 runs here.

This is an important match - the one that will likely govern the fate of the top of the table. Both sides are coming off excellent wins in their respective last matches and it is difficult to separate them both on the basis of form. Besides, they both have immaculately balanced sides each. Northern Districts have performed better as a side in the competition and their position on the ladder suggests that. For that reason and for the fact that the Firebirds might be a bit rusty, it makes all the sense to place money on a Northern Districts win. We are backing Northern Districts here and so should you.
Logan van Beek is a seasoned campaigner and have had a terrific tournament thus far. His experience of bowling at the death and in the powerplay so far come in handy and is likely to be the case in this upcoming match as well. He seems to be the perfect candidate to bet upon for the best bowler of the day for Wellington Firebirds in this upcoming match.
With Finn Allen in swashbuckling form at the top, the Firebirds have an agressive top order that likes to get on with it. On the other hand, Northern Districts have a rather conservative opening pair that likes to take its time before going for the big ones. For that reason, the Firebirds look better placed to have a higher powerplay total.
