We are still pretty early in the CSA T20 Challenge and we have already seen a couple of upsets happen in the tournament. Owing to that, the points table is still pretty much open with not a big difference between the teams placed in the opposite halves of the points table.
Up next in the tournament, the Lions are set to take on the Western Province in what is going to be an important match for both these sides. They are both coming off a win in their respective last match and will be itching to get the ball rolling. The match between them is to be played on 13th February 2022 at St George’s Park, Port Elizabeth.
The Lions are one of the oldest and most consistent clubs in South Africa's domestic scene and would be aiming for a good run in this tournament. They had a remarkably poor start compared to the standards they generally set as they lost their first match to the North West Dragons. However, they didn't really allowed that upset to impact their long-term performance as they quickly bounced back with an excellent win in their subsequent fixture, which was against the Dolphins.
Batting first against the Dolphins, the Lions didn't really have a great start and their middle-order batsmen did well to bring the Lions back into the game. Shane Dadswell and Sisanda Magala were both brilliant with the bat as they propelled Lions to 156, which at one time looked to be more like 130. The final push with the bat proved to be extremely vital as the Lions eventually emerged on top by a margin of mere eight runs. Magala had an outstanding day with the ball as well as he picked two wickets for 26 in his four over. Apart from him, Bjorn Fortuin and Malusi Siboto returned with a couple of wickets each and Codi Yusuf contributed with one wicket.
That win over Dolphins pushed the Lions from near-bottom to the fifth spot on the ladder. They now have a pretty respectable net run rate of -0.075, which is only going to improve if they are able to rack up a few wins. On paper, the Lions have a decent side with a good amalgamation of specialists and all-rounders. Their deep batting may have helped them get across the line in the last match, but they would want their top-order to contribute better. If they can do that and the bowlers bowl as they bowled against the Dolphins, the Lions will be in it with a solid chance.

With a flawless record up until now, Western Province have clearly impressed one and all. They weren't really expected to start as well as they have, but now that they have, they will be looking to build on the momentum they have garnered.
As it currently stands on the points table, Western Province are placed at the second spot with two wins in two matches. Coupled with eight points they have, they have a terrific net run rate of 1.360, which shows how dominant they have been. A win here will push them to the top spot and that is exactly what they will be aiming for.
Western Province started their campaign with a dominant win over Boland and then they followed that up with yet another massive win against the Warriors. Chasing a reasonably good total of 163 against the Warriors, their top-order was particularly ruthless and they going for the target with frantic pace. Richard Levi and Jonathan Bird added 63 runs for the first wicket in just 28 deliveries. Although they lost a few quick wickets in succession thereafter, the likes of Dane Vilas and George Linde completed the chase with considerable ease. They won the match with six wickets in hands and 17 balls to spare.
On paper, Western Province have a terrific side and that has been apparent with the way they have performed. The opening pair of Richard Levi and Jonathan Bird has been brilliant and will play a key role in this upcoming match as well. Besides, they have experience available right throughout the lineup and that can prove to be a crucial factor should things get tight. All in all, with the kind of side that the Western Province have, they will always be a tough side to beat. If they are able to play to their peak potential in this upcoming match, the Lions will have their work cut out.

These are early days in the tournament that is pretty long and while teams can bounce back after a poor start, no team would want to take that road.
