We are closing in one the knockouts stage in the Vitality T20 Blast 2022 and we should start getting some clarity on the qualification scenarios in the week to follow. The upcoming few matches are going to be crucial in that aspect and all teams involved are expected to come out all guns blazing in what could mark the beginning of the final push in the quest for the playoffs.
Up next in the South Group, Essex Eagles are set to take on Somerset in what is an important match for both these sides. The two sides are both comfortably placed in the top-half of the ladder and a win here will only strengthen the winner's position. The losing team, however, will get into the mid-table muddle, getting out from which is not going to be easy.
The match between the two sides is to be played at the County Cricket Ground, Chelmsford on Sunday 19th June 2022.
Essex Eagles survived a close scare as their match against Sussex got too close to their comfort despite their batsmen scoring a mammoth total of 244 batting first. While Essex did showcase their strength with the bat in that match, their vulnerabilities with the ball were also highlighted. They would do well to keep those from getting exploited again, especially given that they have not had enough time to ponder upon the proceedings of their game against Sussex.
As it currently stands on the ladder, the Eagles are flying high at the third spot with five wins from nine games. They have 11 points to their name along with the net run rate of 0.563, which just shows how dominant they have been. A win here will push them to the second spot on the ladder and that is exactly what they will be aiming for.

Somerset are doing exceedingly well this year and that is evident by the results they have posted. Just like the Eagles, they are coming off a win in their previous match, over Gloucs, in a high-scoring fixture. From their last five matches, Somerset have won three and would be looking to build on to that.
Currently on the points table, Somerset are placed second with six wins from nine matches and a decent net run-rate of 0.529. They have 12 points to their name and a win here will push them closer to Surrey, who are reigning supreme at the top of the table. As has been the case in the last few matches, we expect Somerset to come out hard here too and if they are able to play to their potential, getting past them could prove to be incredibly challenging.
Tom Banton, Will Smeed, Rilee Rossouw, Thomas Abell, Tom Lammonby, Lewis Gregory, Ben Green, RE Van Der Merwe, Lewis Goldsworthy, Peter Siddle, Jack Brooks.
Both these sides are coming off confidence-boosting wins in their respective last encounters and will be brimming with confidence. There isn't a lot to choose between the two on the basis of form but Somerset appears to be a slightly better-balanced side between the two. To add to that, they bat deep and that could be a crucial factor in this format of the game. Considering that and the other factors stated above, Somerset go in as favorites to win this upcoming encounter.
