Just as we are moving towards the fag-end of the tournament in the Vitality T20 Blast, the competition is taking all sorts of turn. The points tables in both groups are rendered wide open with a few unexpected results, making the competition ever more exciting. The next few matches are going to be crucial from the qualification scenarios points of view and the teams participating are all going to come out all guns blazing.
Up next in the competition, Derbyshire Falcons are set to take on Northamptonshire Steelbacks in a top-drawer North Group fixture. Both these sides are in the top-half of the ladder at the moment and would want to keep it that way by registering a win here in this contest. It is all going to be interesting, largely because of the kind of results they have posted. With arguably a spot in the knockouts at stake, we expect both these sides to come out all guns blazing.
The Vitality T20 Blast match between Northamptonshire Steelbacks and Derbyshire Falcons is to be played on Tuesday, June 21st 2022 at the County Ground, Derby.
Just when it was looking to be all over for the Falcons, they bounced back with some powerful cricket. With that big win over Birmingham Bears in a closely-fought encounter, Derbyshire stormed their way into the top-four and would want to keep it that way. They were languishing in the lower half of the points table for most part and it is certainly refreshing to see them in the top half.
As it currently stands on the points table, Derbyshire Falcons are at the fourth spot with 12 points to their name coupled with a very good net run rate of 0.455. Another win here in this upcoming match will see them jump to the second spot, provided they win big enough, and that is exactly what they will be aiming for. They have so far blown hot and cold but a win like they had in their previous match would have imbibed a lot of confidence among them. If they are able to play to their potential here as well, getting past them could prove to be a colossal challenge.

Northamptonshire had a dreadful start to their campaign, losing both their opening encounters by big margins, but have certainly done a remarkable job to bounce back from that position. Not only have they bounced back, they have also ensured that they stay ahead in the race to the next round. They have been in a rampaging mood ever since they have been at their full-strength and will want to keep it that way.
On the points table at the moment, they are placed second with 14 points to their name and a terrific net run rate of 0.712. A win here will push them to the top of the ladder, at least in the interim, and that is what they would be aiming for. While a loss would not really dent their chances to qualify, it would definitely put them in a state of bother, leaving them in a much more difficult position than they are in right now. Considering the availability of T20 specialists they have right throughout and the form they have shown, they would mean business. If they are able to play to their potential, getting past them would certainly be a steep climb.
Ben Curran, Chris Lynn, Josh Cobb, Saif Zaib, Rob Keogh, Lewis McManus, James Neesham, Tom Taylor, Graeme White, Ben Sanderson, Freddie Heldreich.
This is an important match for both these sides with playoffs closing in. A win here will certainly put the ball in the winner's court and both sides would want to be in that court. Considering the recent form of the two sides, it is hard to separate the two. Having said that, the Northants have a better-balanced side with the likes of Chris Lynn and James Neesham doing an excellent job. For that reason and the other ones stated above, Northamptonshire Steelbacks walk in as firm favorites in this upcoming contest.
