Super Smash 2021 just produced a sight that not many would have seen or experienced often. Trent Boult smashed a dramatic last-ball six to take Northern Knights to a much-needed win. While that win moved Northern Knights to the top of the table in Super Smash 2021, it also made the competition a lot more intense in the middle part of the ladder.
Up next in the competition, Canterbury Kings are all set to take on Otago Volts in what could prove to be a campaign-defining match for the winning side. Both these sides are stuck in the mid-table muddle and will want to get out of it as soon as possible. This upcoming match between the two sides is to be played at Hagley Oval, Christchurch on December 26th 2021.
Canterbury Kings may have lost their previous match to Northern Knights, they would not be too disappointed as the loss didn't really impact their net run rate much, which could prove to be a massive factor at the back end of the tournament. They are still in a decent position on the ladder and a win here will push them to the top of the table and that is exactly what they'll be aiming for.
As it currently stands, they are placed at the third spot on the points table with two wins in four matches. While they'll still be pretty happy with the position they are in, they would be a tad disappointed with the consistency they have shown. They have won their matches on alternate basis and that has kept them from getting any sort of momentum whatsoever in the competition.
In their last match, which was against the Knights, their batsmen managed to put just a subpar total on the board, which was eventually chased well by the Knights. Yes, the surface was difficult to bat on, but their total of 107 was too less to put any chasing team in a spot of bother. Their bowlers did put an excellent effort, stretching the match to the last over before Trent Boult scored an unanticipated six to put the Knights ahead.
On paper, Canterbury Kings have a decent side that has just been a little too inconsistent with their execution. They do not have their star players at their disposal, but that is the case with all five teams in the competition. It is high-time that the Kings sort their execution issues and if they are able to do that, they will be a difficult side to get past.

Otago Volts had a terrible run last year and they seem to be following a similar trajectory this year as well. Although they are just one spot below the Kings, their performance has been a lot inferior, which is apparent by their poor net run rate of -0.918. A win here, however, will take them to the third spot and that could prove to be just the tonic they need to progress in the competition.
From a total of four matches played, Otago Volts have won one and lost two. They started off with a heartbreaking loss at the hands of Central Districts in their first match, but then bounced back with a stupendous win over Northern Knights. More recently though, they are coming off a massive defeat at the hands of Central Stags, a loss that further dented their net run rate.
Chasing a total of 180 on a decent surface with short boundaries, the Volts just could not get going and were eventually completely dismantled for a total of 127 runs. On paper, Otago Volts lack experience and depth in their batting and that has been apparent in almost all of their matches. Their bowlers being a bit too inconsistent has made the matter even worse for them. They will need to play out of their skins in this upcoming match and if they are able to do that, getting past them should be an uphill task even for the Kings.
Hamish Rutherford, Nick Kelly, Jacob Duffy, Michael Rippon, Matthew Bacon, Max Chu, Neil Broom, Llew Johnson, Anaru Kitchen, Angus McKenzie, Tasman Jones.
While this is by no means a difficult track to bat, batsmen cannot just attack right from the outset. Also, we expect the surface to slow down as the game progresses and batting might become a bit difficult. Both of the matches played here in this season were won by the team batting first and both sides will be wary of that. Considering that and the other factors stated above, the captain winning the toss is likely to bat first.

We have seen just a couple of matches being played here at this venue in this edition of the Super Smash and on both occasions, the surface was quite sporting. Bowlers and batsmen both had their chances and we expect the same to be the case in the upcoming match as well. The temperatures are set to hover around 20 degrees during the course of the match, making it an excellent day to play and enjoy cricket. Considering the recent results and the likely surface on offer on the match day, the team batting first will be targeting to put a total of at least 175 runs here.

Both sides are coming off unsuccessful outings in their respective matches and will be desperate to get something out in their favor from this upcoming match. Comparing the two sides on the basis of form and on-paper combinations, Canterbury Kings are a slightly better placed side between the two, and are therefore, our pick to emerge as winners in this upcoming contest.
Chad Bowes is arguably the only batsmen for the Kings who has looked consistent in the tournament thus far. These are early days and he already has a couple of big scores to his name. Considering the form he is in and the fact that he bats at the top of the order, he seems to be the perfect candidate to bet on for the top scorer of the day for the Kings.
Although batting first here hasn't thrown many challenges, chasing hasn't been as easy here. That is apparent by the results of the two games played here as both the matches were won by team batting first by reasonably good margins. With par score expected to be around 170, expect the chasing team to score a bit less. Considering that, we expect the total runs scored in the match to be less than 331 runs.
