"In this house was born Salmon P. Chase, U.S. Senator
from Ohio (1849-1855), Governor of Ohio (1855-1859), a founder of the Republican Party and leader
in the anti-slavery movement. After serving as Secretary of the Treasury in Lincoln's Cabinet, he
was appointed Chief Justice of the United States. The Chase Manhattan Bank in New York was named
in his honor." erected 1971 The Salmon P. Chase Birthplace was listed on the National Register and designated a National Historic Landmark in 1975. |
