9th Bombardment Squadron

Constituted in 1917 as the 9th Observation Squadron, the 9th Bombardment Squadron (Heavy) was the oldest of the 7th Bombardment Group's four squadrons. Equipped with B-17s at the begning of the war, the 9th was temporarily transferred to the Middle East on 23 June 1942, taking with it all of the 7th Bombardment Groups B-17s, effectively leaving the 10th Air Force with no offensive capabilities until the 436th Bombardment Squadron completed its transition to the B-24 "Liberator" later in the year. The 9th remained in the Middle East until mid-October, 1942 when it returned to India and transitioned to the B-24.
