1380 Turbo intercooler - Rolling road

I had booked a rolling road session before I completed my engine rebuild. It turned out to be lucky because the engine did not like my uprated needle one bit. Off boost the engine felt pretty strong but once the boost rose it felt like slamming the brakes. Fuel problems !!!

Needle needed a lot of modifications to make the engine work. Little by little we got the engine working as it should at it was time to do some power runs. My goal had been to make the engine put out a lot of torque so I was not exactly looking for big hp numbers.

At 0,5 bar (about 7,5 psi) the engine put out 121 hp/5870 rpm and 161,7 Nm@4740 rpm. Torque was way more than what I had expected. On the road it was really fun to experiment the engine power. First impression was that it is lethal. But you get used to it.

Rolling road report #1Results from the first visit to rollers.

I drove about 10000 km the first summer and only failure so to speak was cracked engine-to-turbo oil pipe. Quick oil change... I prepared several needles during the summer and finally checked the intercooler. It turned out that I had adjusted the intercooler thermostat the wrong way so it hardly ever opened. Renault intercooler has a by-pass door inbuilt so when the ambient air is cool enough the air is not lead through the core but directly out of the intercooler.

Rolling road report #2Results from the second visit to rollers.

Back to rollers to check the mysterious misfire. This time a new needle which was a bit richer at lower revs and leaner at top. And the intercooler functioning. Results were even more satisfying: 133 hp@6015 rpm and 173 Nm@4700 rpm. Still measured at 0,5 bar.

Mysterious misfire refused to appear while on rollers. However, scope display showed something wrong with the Lumenition ignition so I decided to get rid of it and fitted a more powerful MSD system during the next winter.

Since the power curves were drawn on different scales so I chose to scan/import the curves into Excel and prepared the following Hp/torque curves in hp/Lbft.
