Mary Drake, the wife of John Judge, was also the second wife of Archibald Dunbar. Both men were our great great grandfathers. After John Judge died in Farmington,IA she stayed on with her 3 youngest children, as the 1850 census will attest. At that census, she was living in Lee County,IA. According to 1840 IA census John Drake lived in Louisa County, and John A. Drake lived in Lee County,IA. In 1847 Iowa census there were 2 J.A. Drakes in Davis Co.

One might wonder what they were doing in Farmington, IA. Farmington is quite near Drakesville, both in Davis County. Also, both Farmington and Drakesville were along the Mormon Pioneer Trail through Iowa. The Mormons were forced from their homes in Nauvoo,IL on February 4 of 1846, one of the most bitterly cold winters in Iowa's history. More than 15000 camped along the trails between Farmington and Drakesville on their way to Utah. Mormons crossing the county often exchanged work for provisions, and their handywork is still evident in the county today.

John Adams Drake is the founder of Drakesville. It came into being February 12 1847 and in 1850 had 108 inhabitants (in 1975, the pop. was 140). Both John Adams and his son Francis Marion Drake were prominent citizens. Francis became govenor of Iowa from 1896-1898. Because of his donations of land and money Drake Univ. was named after him. More research needs to be done to determine if Mary was a relative to John Adams Drake. The fact that she remained near Drakesville even after her husband died, may mean that she had other family members helping to sustain her family there.

In any case, sometime between 1850-1854,Mary "Polly" Drake Judge returned to Indiana. This is evidenced by the fact that her children, Henry and Margaret, were married in Indiana. Her older children were also living there.

Indiana marriage records verify that Mary Judge and Archibald Dunbar were married on August 5, 1855 by Margaret's father-in-law James Collier, a minister. (Mr. Collier also married Margaret and Henry to their spouses.) Archibald's first wife, Elizabeth Bell, must have died in Indiana between 1850-1855. Archibald Dunbar is Henry's wife's father. So, Henry's mother and father-in-law married each other after their spouses died.

According to the history that Uncle Lewis has written, Henry & his wife Mary, and Mary's father, Archibald Dunbar, and Mary's brother Archibald and wife, went to Iowa in May 1856, directly after the marriage of Henry and Mary Dunbar Judge. If Mary Judge (daughter of John Judge and sister of Henry) did not accompany them at that time, then she and her mother, Polly, must have followed them to Iowa shortly, as she was married in Tama County in June 1856 to Lorenzo Dobson.

In the 1870 Indianvillage Twp,Tama Co., IA census both Archibald Dunbars are named. Archibald Dunbar-farmer, 80 yrs, and Mary-keeping house,76, real-estate value $700, personal property value $200. Archibald b. in North Carolina, and Mary in Pennsylvania.

We don't know where Archibald died or where he is buried. His son Archibald and wife Nancy are in the Dobson cemetery. Those records are incomplete at best and will never be updated because the book burned back in 1918 or so. However, Mary Dunbar is buried in the Iowa River Cemetery alongside Benjamin and his wife Phebee. On the stone this information is given:

She was married to Archibald DUNBAR on AUG 5 1855 in Henry Co., IN.
