James Buchanan BAKER was born on NOV 15 1857 in Upper

Iowa. !"In contrast to the patient Sina, James Baker was a
chronic malcontent who
seemed always to be searching for something. During the years
when the family was growing, they moved through the states of
Ohio, South Dakota, Inciana, and North Dakota. In late years with
the family grown, James and Sina moved to Sioux City, Iowa. James
was many things during his career - farmer, trader, shearer of
sheep, and inventor. in 1926 he announced his invention of an oil
burnier- one of the very first in what was later to become avery
large field. The invention, however, failed to make him wealthy,
probably because he failed to follow up on his advantage. He was
never very religious but he was known as an honest man who paid
his debts and tried to live by the golden rule. However, whenever
the family lived near a church, everyone attended and several of
the children were baptised. In middle life, James weighed
approximately 212 pounds and was 5'11". He was known as a
keen trader and several times became prosperous by the standards
of his day. His death probably came from gall bladder trouble,
the same ailment that took his mother. During life, he separated
himself from his own brothers and sisters and when his father
died, the message was routed through his brother, Jack, the only
one who knew where he was." Baker info given to me by Mrs.
