KINDLUND: SVANTE (SWANTE) KINDLUND
Svante (Swante) Kindlund came to America from Sweden in 1879 by
boat which took him six weeks to cross the ocean. He came to
Vermillion and worked on a farm for three years. He had to pay
his passport fee and buy a team of oxen. Then in 1882, he drove
his oxen and lumber wagon to Charles Mix County and filed claim
on the land Section 20, Rhoda Township (now owned by Peter
Ludens). The first thing he did was to dig a well with a spade.
Then he made a cave, rather a dugout about 12 by 14. He had to
drive to the river to get his firewood, and also to get trees for
posts and to cover his dugout. Then he went back to Vermillion
for awhile and worked some more. During this time he married Emma
Person. They stayed awhile following their marriage, to work so
they would have a little money to live on. Then Swante went back
to the claim to get things lined up for his wife to join him. A
few weeks later she arrived in White Lake on the train. Swante
met her with the team of oxen and a lumber wagon and took her to
the homestead. Swante and Emma lived in the dugout for two years.
Their bed was made of some old two-by-fours, and the mattress was
stuffed with hay. Two wooden boxes were used for chairs. After
two years they had saved enough money to build their first
one-room house about 16 by 16 feet in dimension. This was where
their first three children: Laura, Ole and Emanuel were born.
About five years later they built a bigger house, which still
stands (I think). This farm is located about seven and one half
miles northwest of Geddes. Another child, Minnie was born a short
time after the house was completed, but later she and her brother
Ole died of diptheria. The nearest doctor being at Armour, Swante
went with a team of horse and wagon to get the doctor, by the
time they returned to the farm the two children had passed away.
Sometime later their last two children, Ben and another Minnie
were born. Doctors being so far away and transportation was a
problem a midwife, to whom they paid one dollar, came to the farm
home to assist in the births. This was a neighbor lady, Mrs.
Rhoda who made the rounds.
There were many hardships, crop failures, dry weather, hail and
cyclones. Many settlers were discouraged and left the country.
Hemming Anderson was their nearest neighbor to the south and John
Olofson on the east. They all came from the same place in Sweden,
so had many things in common.
There was quite a large settlement of Swedes in the area. About
1904, they gathered about five hundred dollars and built a church
known as Platte Valley Lutheran, which was located about one mile
east of the Kindlund farm. The land upon which the church was
built was donated by Jim Sabin, a landowner. Children of the area
were baptized and confirmed in this church. Many times Mrs.
Kindlund and others with their children walked to church. This
Platte Valley Lutheran Church remained active until 1935. It
could not be maintained any longer, so was sold to a man at
Joubert, South Dakota, who made it into a garage.
The Swedish Cemetary was located one half mile north of the
church or one and one half miles south of Bovee, South Dakota.
The land for the cemetery was given by a landowner, Mr. Rhoda.
The first burials in the cemetery began about 1890 but as years
passed, no one maintained it and most of the bodies have been
moved to Pleasant Lawn Cemetery in Geddes, South Dakota.
Swante Kindlund was born in 1851 in Sweden; he died in 1930. Emma
Person Kindlund was born in Sweden in 1857 and she died in 1939.
They were the parents of six children: Laura married Dolf Hedlin;
one son Don 1922. Ole was born in 1888 and died of diptheria in
1897. Emanuel was born in 1890 and died in 1930; he was not
married. Minnie died from diptheria in 1895 when she was six
months old. Ben (1896-1945) married Hattie Greiner. Minnie (1898)
married John Blake (1899-1973) and they had one son Alan (1932).
Children were: Margreta Nilsdotter
