MARIA ETTIN

THE ADVENTURES OF MARIA

I had a desperate urge to become a sailor and sail the seas. When I told my family and friends, their faces went deadpan. I knew sailing around the world could be a fatal labyrinth, but I was counting on the constellations to guide me. Finally after several weeks of debating, I made the attempt and sailed off.

Being just a one man crew on my tiny ship, I quickly hoisted the sail and drifted way. It was a lovely morning and the water was calm. I watched the land until it became like a speck of dirt. Then I turned. Looking out into the ocean and dreaming about the adventure that awaited me, I realized then how I would miss everyone back home.

As the next few days passed, I knew I was destined to sail the world. I could think of nothing better then to lay in the sun with the wind on my face and the water at my feet. I thought to myself, as I broke out my pole "Where shall I go?" Then I cast the line.

It wasn't before long that I spotted land. I decided to go investigate. Coming about, thoughts of home popped into my head. Remembering the heavenly made pastries, the enormous forest bungalows, and the ceremonial jamborees of my tranquil community, I wondered if this land would be as divine.

When the sun came up, I abandoned my ship jumped into the dingy and rowed to shore for a stroll on the beach. Digging my feet into the sand, I stopped to take in a breath of the salty sea air. Soon after the swash freed my feet, I continued to rome the strange land. Glancing about, I strolled into the off shore woods. Along the way, I scouted for food to eat. A thunderous sound echoed as I neared the edge. Suspiciously poking my head from the brush, I peered down. A waterfall ran across a valley covered in arrangements of violet colored flowers. Hearing a high pitched squeal, I scrambled to flip around. Out of no where, a wild boar emerged from the trees. Standing there vulnerable without a weapon, I felt intimidate and powerless. Taking a deep breath, I hurled myself over the edge.

Submerged in water, I struggled to the top and swam to the side. I found myself face to face with the green meadow. I crawled to a dark grassy patch and picked one of the violet colored flowers. Resting my weary head on a tiny rock, I listened to the birds in the near by treetops, and watched the butterflies as they fluttered passed. Taking in the sights, I began to wondered how, or if, I was going to get back to my ship. But for the moment, I was going to lay there and relax. After all, I did have an exciting morning.

When the sun was high in the sky, I awoke. Realizing that I had drifted off, I sprang to my feet in attempts to search for a suitable place to stay the night. Muttering to myself during the process, What kind of a mess did I get myself into now? Back to scouting for food, and now for a place to spend the night. Who knows where I am on this forsaken island. Not to far off into the woods, I collected some branches and leaves. I climbed up one of the near by trees and quickly started laying the floor. I was starved at this point, and had nothing to show for it. When the bottom was finished I climbed down. Grabbing an extra branch left at the base of the tree, I headed for the river.

I walked the edge until I spotted a calm area. Stepping into the water, I thrust my hand back and pointed the branch into my reflection. At the first sight of a fish, I jabbed at it. Again and again until I stabbed one. Quickly I drew up the branch and flung it on land, not wanting it to escape. Returning back to camp, I started a simple fire. Sitting down, I filleted the fish and ate it.

Climbing back in the tree, I continued building the roof incase it rained. There was no need for walls, for I wouldnt be staying passed the morning. As I finished, it became dark. I climbed back down to put out the fire, and then back up again. I didnt sleep a wink. I lied awake cringed in a tight ball. Shifting my eyes, from side to side, each time a new sound was heard. A cold chill came through so, I climbed down and restarted the fire. This time I let it burn through the night.

Putting out the fire, I greeted the new day. Eager to get back to the ship, I immediately headed back in the direction I had come. I followed the river. It brought me back to the cliff I had fallen off. Now all I had to do was figure out a way up.
