Morgen

Lady of the Lake

The Lady of the Lake of Arthurian tradition is identified in early texts as Morgen, the Royal Virgin of Avalon, daughter of King Afallach. She is attended by eight sister-priestesses who maintain the inviolable integrity of the mystical island of Avalon, and is the most skilled of healers. It is into her care that the wounded Arthur is bestowed after the Battle of Camlann. Geoffrey of Monmouth describes her as, "Morgen, a Goddess, who receives Arthur into her island realm of Avalon, there to heal him of his wounds". Her wisdom and healing care work through endless ages to restore Arthur, keeping the vessel of his life in timeless suspension, until he comes again as Rex Quondam Rexque Futurus, the Once and Future King. As she oversaw Arthur's initiation into kingship by the bestowing of the sword Excalibur, so she receives him when his kingly task is over. Later texts make Morgen a mortal woman but a powerful enchanter bent on bringing Arthur to his ruin: this development shows a fusion of early traditions and results in a character who is aligned to the Morrighan of Irish myth as giver of life and death. She is the matron of long-term illnesses and of spritual initiations. Her sacred place is said to be Glamorgan in Wales.
