Branwen

Venus of the Northern Seas

One of the three harmful blows of the Island of Britain was struck by Matholwch the Irish King upon Branwen, sister of Bran the Blessed. Branwen's wedding to Matholwch was marred by the terrible insults which her brother, Efnisien meted out to the Irish guests. Although Bran gave Matholwch the great cauldron of rebirth as the best compensation for these insults, Matholwch never forgave the Britons and subjected his new wife to menial tasks and beatings. Branwen trained a starling to take news of her treatment home to Bran who raised a great army and harried the Irish. Such was the devastation in the war between Ireland and Britian that followed, Branwen died of a broken heart.

She is described as one of the three great matriarchs of Britian in the triads and is the matron of all who are constrained in unhappy marriages for the sake of their children.
