Cheng Hoon Teng Temple

Malacca

The Cheng Hoon Teng temple is a Taoist temple, located at No. 25 Jalan Tokong, Malacca Town, Malaysia. It is the oldest functioning temple in Malaysia. This temple is the oldest formal Chinese temple in South East Asia. It was founded by the second Chinese Kapitan Lee Wei King in 1646 during the Dutch colonization of Melaka. Significantly, this temple was constructed by using original materials shipped in all the way from China. It will definitely cost quite a fortune and required hard work during that time. Since most of the wealthy Chinese traders in Melaka are from the Hokkien clan, the architecture of this temple is largely of Hokkien temple style. Another notable Hokkien influence can be seen by reading the translated name of the temple itself..
