John Olsson

Is the Instructor of Trombone at Mount Union College and Youngstown State University's Dana School of Music.

Mr. Olsson holds the Bachelor's Degree in Music Education from Youngstown State University's Dana School of Music where he was a student of Vern Kagarice, and the Master of Fine Arts Degree in Trombone Orchestral Performance from Carnegie-Mellon University where his teacher was the late Byron McCulloh. Other teachers include Elliot Chasanov, James DeSano, Tom Klaber, Allen Kofsky,  and Ray Premru.

In May 2007, John won the Principal Trombone position with the River City Brass Band.  He is also currently a member of the Jazz Heritage Orchestra and the Canton Concert Band.

He is a long-term sub with the Youngstown and Akron Symphony Orchestras and was a member of the Canton and Wheeling Symphonies.  He has performed in Cleveland for Broadway shows; with the Pittsburgh Opera; the Cleveland Light Opera; the Cleveland Opera and Ballet Orchestra; Westmoreland Symphony Orchestra; Akron, Canton and Carnegie Brass Quintets; the YSU-Dana School of Music Alumni Jazz Ensemble; the Tuscarawas Philharmonic; the Canton Players Guild and Lyric Opera; the Hiram and Kent State University-Stark Campus Concert Bands and the Jimmy Dorsey Orchestra.

He has performed for and with such notables as: Slide Hampton, Tommy Harrell, Jerry Lewis, Keith Lockhart, Johnny Mathis, Maureen McGovern, Michael Martin Murphy, Nancy Wilson, Jim Nabors, Doc Severenson, Nadja Salerno-Sonnenberg, The Temptations, Toni Tennille, Donna Theodore, Barry Tuckwell, Frankie Valli, Bobby Vinton, Allen Vizutti, Andre Watts, Dionne Warwick and Bill Watrous.

Mr. Olsson is a member of the International Trombone Association; Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia International Music Fraternity; and Locals #111 and #142 of the International Federation of Musicians.
