Bits & Bytes: The Digital Darkroom

sunrise sub foto
Sun Rise, San Diego, CA Heading Out To Sea - Evening Cruise,
San Diego, CA

This is an example of how digitally stored images can be manipulated or combined to produce a new image. The image of the submarine was made in the early evening and the sunrise image was made the next morning. Ektachrome 100 was the film used in both cases. Both 35mm slides were then scanned on to a Kodak Photo CD. Using Adobe Photoshop, I opened the submarine file and selected the submarine using the magic wand selection tool. I then copied and pasted it into a layer opened in the sunrise image file. Working in the layer with the selected submarine image, I made some size, position, color and contrast adjustments (only to the submarine) and then merged the two images with the flatten image command. You see the resulting image. In the "real" darkroom, this process would be performed by "sandwiching" together the two image transparencies and probably doing alot of masking, dodging and burning (not to mention all the test printing.)
