Spring Break 1996 - Wando

In the end of April 1996, George, SunKyung, HaeYoung and I went to Cheju, the "Hawaii of Korea." To get there, we had to catch a boat in Wando , so we took a bus to wando, had a picnic and caught the ferry to Cheju. We did have a little time to play around in Wando, which has a very nice pebble beach (well, pebble is actually somewhat of a misnomer, the smooth round pebbles were six inches across or more). Hae Young had prepared KimBap for our lunch, which we enjoyed on the beach before walking around for a little while. There were fields of barley and plenty of local people out drying Kochus (hot peppers), as it was such a nice sunny day. Then it was down to the port to catch the afternoon ferry across to Cheju island (click for the ferry schedule ), where we arrived just in time for the sunset. (As an aside, Admiral Yi Sun Shin once operated out of Wando while fighting off the invading Japanese naval forces.)

This is our arrival in Cheju. We then caught a bus to one of the churches there, where the pastor's family put us up for the night. Most of our time in Cheju was facilitated by friends of our Kwangju Institute director.
