May 17, 2000Dear Class of 2000:
Thorton Wilder wrote in his play Our Town, "Isn't life awful and wonderful?" As far as I'm concerned, fourth period has always been wonderful. I have some great memories--hope you do, too. Here are just a few..
Terrence, of course, has a wonderful, rich voice, but do you remember the day he imitated the bunny and made us all laugh? How about the afternoon we went outside and Jamie and Tiffany had a second lunch? Remember when we discovered the beautiful poetry John wrote? Or how about when Mindy read her speech and we were teary-eyed? Kenny, my artist, how will I know when Goody's has a sale? Josh and Rebecca were our terrific ballplayers. It was such a pleasure to hear our talented Maria sing and play the guitar. Diem and Boualay, my cultural ambassadors, "made" me buy those cute silver key rings. Jennifer, you inspired me to read more. Matt sold me grapefruit, traded car stories, and made a good lookin' shield. Jacklyn, my track star, is indeed chivalrous. When I think of Julie I think of her VW and her contagious smile (she could always get me off-track). Michael is so gregarious and laid-back; I had trouble finding him a seat--everyone wanted to be and is his friend. Jason has an incredible vocabulary. He never had to look up and define a single vocabulary word. In a few years, we need to look for B.J. on the PGA Tour. Beth had a wonderfu write-up in the newspaper about her expertise with reptiles. Manivone has such exquisite eyes and a soft voice (she reminds me of a very famous movie star). Tiffany loved her fashion magazines and was "in the know" on the latest trends. Daniel kept reminding me you were SENIORS and needed free days, extended lunches, and pizzas.
We made shields, were inducted into the Order of the Grizzly, performed acts of chivalry, demonstrated math problems, watched old black and white movies, lamented over Macbeth and Hamlet, took Quizzy Poos, applied to colleges, and even managed to wade through some boring "stuff." Can you imagine that?
The most touching, moving, humbling assignment was one you probably didn't care for--the autobiographies. I learned so much from your stories. You are truely good, resilient, brave, honest, remarkable young adults. You are a credit to Northside High School and to Fort Smith. Your families must be very proud of you. I certainly am.
So--smile, be happy, and follow your dreams. Remember, you can do anything you set your mind to do. I'm counting on you.
I miss you already,
