- Desk Top PC - computer that typically sits on a desk, table or workstation area
- CPU -
Central Processing Unit is basically the brains for a computer. This
unit makes most of the decisions for the computer and is located on the
Mother Board
- Processor - relating to the Central Processing Unit see CPU
- Mother Board - Board that has the major components that make it possible for the computer to get specific tasks completed
- RAM -
Random
Access Memory this is the memory that gets loaded up with software and
data when the computer is powered up and is lost when the computer is
turned off
- Memory - typically refers to RAM memory
- Storage - typically refers to the amount of memory that a hard drive will hold
- Hard drive - unit that stores software programs and
data. Typically is located inside the computer chassis. Some hard
drives are external to the chassis and can be connected through a USB
port
- USB port - Universal Serial Bus port. Interface that allows for easy connection for a device to be connected to a computer
- Ethernet port - A IEEE 802.3 standard that defines a specific connector configuration that connects a computer to a network
- FireWire port - interface that allows for easy connection for a device to be connected to a computer
- Expansion Slot/Board - slot on a Mother Board where an Extension Board can be inserted to give extended functionality to a computer system
- Removable storage - refers to items that can be inserted,
written to or accessed and removed from the computer such as CD's and
DVD's
- CD/CD-RW
- compact disk that holds data. Some CD's are CD-R and CD-RW which
means they can be written to multiple times instead of just once as is
the case for a plain CD
- USB Flash Drive
- also known as USB thumb drive or memory stick. USB device that
allows the user to insert the unit into a USB port to quickly and
easily save data onto it
- Micro Hard Drive - USB hard drive that is approximately
half the size of a deck of cards and allows the user to insert the unit
into a USB port to quickly and easily save data onto it
- Monitor - screen display for the computer
- Modem -
device that converts the data signals into electrical signals that can
be sent and received over telephone lines. Modems are typically used
for dial up connections to the internet

- Peripherals - equipment connected to a computer to expand its functionality
- Windows XP - software operating system from Microsoft cooperation
- AMD - company that makes microprocessors also know as the CPU's
- Intel - company that makes microprocessors also know as the CPU's
- MB - Megabit or 1,000,000 bits
- GB - Gigabit or 1,000,000,000 bits
