O grupo Tantra iniciou as suas actividades em 1976, quando Manuel Cardoso e Armando Gama, de Lisboa, se juntam e formam um duo. Manuel Cardoso (guitarrista) tinha passado por outro grupo famoso na �poca, os Beatnicks, onde a vocalista era Lena D'�gua. Armando Gama tocava teclas. O nome Tantra foi escolhido por Manuel Cardoso, que andava a praticar yoga. A este n�cleo inicial juntam-se o baixista Am�rico Lu�s, o baterista Rui Rosas e o percussionista Firmino.
Com esta forma��o gravam um single "Alquimia da Luz", que permite que o grupo se afirme como um dos primeiros grupos portugueses a seguir a corrente progressiva praticada pelos Yes ou os Genesis. A banda estreia-se ao vivo juntamente com os Beatnicks e, ap�s a sa�da de Rosas e Firmino, entra um novo baterista, Toz� Almeida, famoso por tocar quase sempre em contratempo, com uma bateria que era um "monstro".
Com esta nova forma��o o grupo grava, em 1977, o seu primeiro LP "Mist�rios e Maravilhas", hoje considerado, mesmo a n�vel internacional, um "cl�ssico" do Rock progressivo.
Ao contr�rio do que acontecia na Inglaterra , onde o progressivo estava em decl�nio, os Tantra arrastavam multid�es em Portugal. Tanto assim que conseguiram encher o Coliseu dos Recreios, em Lisboa, um feito in�dito para um grupo de Rock. Tony Moura (vindo dos Psico) entra na forma��o do grupo, para refor�ar as vozes e o grupo come�a a ensaiar os primeiros passos dum espect�culo com muito de teatral. Manuel Cardoso come�a a usar a m�scara de um velho no tema "� Beira do Fim", nos espect�culos ao vivo.
Armando Gama abandona e, para o seu lugar, entra Pedro Mestre que, logo depois seria substitu�do por Pedro Lu�s, mais tarde dos Da Vinci. Em 1978 os Tantra editam "Holocausto", um disco mais amadurecido, em que as vozes j� come�am a sobressair. Segue-se nova tourn�e nacional e o sucesso continuou, s� que o rumo musical mudou. Manuel Cardoso aproveitou os novos ventos que sopravam de Inglaterra e come�ou a enveredar pelo estilo New-Wave.
Em 30 de Maio de 1980, integrado num tour nacional, com publicidade nas r�dios nacionais, o grupo visita a cidade da Guarda, para promover o seu novo disco de originais. Esse espect�culo, no qual o teatro era uma presen�a constante, mostrava bem que os rumos musicais dos Tantra j� estavam muito longe do progressivo, embora os velhos �xitos n�o fossem esquecidos.
A l�ngua portuguesa, usada at� aqui nas can��es do grupo, cedia lugar � l�ngua de Shakespeare, numa tentativa frustrada de internacionaliza��o.
O novo disco intitulado "Humanoid Flesh" revelou-se um fracasso. Neste disco j� n�o participa Am�rico Lu�s que � substitu�do no baixo por Dedos Tubar�o (que �, nem mais nem menos, Pedro Ayres Magalh�es).

Os Tantra terminaram a sua carreira em 1981. Toz� integrou os Her�is do Mar e Manuel Cardoso (que, no �ltimo disco dos Tantra se transformara em "Frodo") gravou, a solo, ainda em 1981, o single "Machos Latinos", e no ano seguinte o LP "Noites de Lisboa" (com a participa��o de Ant�nio Jos� Almeida e Pedro Lu�s, seus colegas nos Tantra) e depois o LP "Zbaboo Dance".
Em 1995 Manuel Cardoso come�ou a trabalhar na remasteriza��o de uma grava��o ao vivo de um concerto dos Tantra de 1977 (de que viria a resultar o CD "Live Ritual") trabalho que lhe despertou o desejo de fazer renascer os Tantra. Como nenhum dos outros elementos se manifestou dispon�vel, iniciou a busca de outros m�sicos. Depois de reunida a nova forma��o, iniciaram os ensaios em 1998 e trabalhos em est�dio em 2000, do que resultou, em 2002, o alb�m "Terra".

O espect�culo total dos Tantra

Em Portugal, nos anos
subsequentes ao p�s-25 de Abril de 74, o rock registou um
forte acr�scimo na politiza��o das suas letras, fruto dos
tempos revolucion�rios que se viviam. Ao mesmo tempo, a m�sica
popular portuguesa assumiu-se como principal centro de atrac��o
art�stica, o que criou um certo vazio na nossa produ��o
rock. Dois anos depois, Manuel Cardoso, um apaixonado confesso
de grupos como Genesis, Pink Floyd ou Yes, fundou
os Tantra e abanou por
completo o conceito de espect�culo praticado nos nossos
palcos. Ao seu lado estavam Armando Gama (piano), Am�rico
Luis (baixo) e Raul Rosa (bateria), o n�cleo duro de uma
banda hist�rica, mais pelo impacte suscitado pela sua atitude
est�tica, do que propriamente pelo patrim�nio musical que
deixaram.
Um aspecto importante dos Tantra
residia na forte componente espiritual do grupo, em
especial do pr�prio Manuel Cardoso, um seguidor do guru
Maharaj Ji. um mestre incontestado para muitos dos nossos
rockers desse per�odo. No sentido de esquecer um passado
atribulado, marcado pelo envolvimento com estupefacientes,
Cardoso dedica-se de alma e cora��o aos Tantra.
Adoptando a m�scara pontiaguda de uma figura retirada da
Trilogia "O Senhor dos An�is", de Tolkien,
resolve montar o espect�culo total, numa planifica��o
multim�dia inovadora at� � �poca em Portugal, cruzando a m�sica
com encena��es teatrais bizarras, numa montra fort�ssima de
luzes e fumos. Na sua obra discogr�fica destacamos trabalhos
como �Mist�rios e Maravilhas�, �Holocausto� e �Humanoid
Flesh�, numa obra que se iria prolongar mais tarde com o
projecto Frodo, um novo alter-ego de Manuel
Cardoso.
Durante a segunda metade da d�cada,
um outro grupo despontou com uma forte apet�ncia para agitar
o panorama nacional, os Perspectiva,
nascidos no Barreiro, com um vincado pendor l�rico prolet�rio.
Na sua forma��o despontava o nome de T� Pinheiro da Silva,
um m�sico que se iria revelar vital para a m�sica dos nossos
anos 80. Multi-instrumentista e qu�mico de profiss�o, T�
Pinheiro da Silva trouxe ao nosso rock a sua primeira
identidade urbana, fruto dessa viv�ncia industrial na cintura
metropolitana de Lisboa, deixando trabalhos como: os singles
�L� Fora a Cidade� e �Rei Posto Rei Morto�, e
o �lbum �A Quinta Parte do Mundo�, cujo
pressuposto inicial consistia na edi��o de um trabalho
conceptual, s� abandonado devido ao elevado custo da produ��o
implicada para o efeito. De qualquer modo, trata-se de um
grupo que marcou a actividade rock do �outro lado da margem�
com resultados vis�veis nas gera��es que se seguiram.
LIVE RITUAL
No inverno de 1977 os Tantra deram o seu primeiro concerto no Cine Teatro da Encarna��o, uma noite memor�vel para a banda e para o p�blico. A partir da grava��o desse concerto (num gravador A77 Revox de dois canais), depois remasterizada, foi editado em 2003 o CD "Live Ritual":

In 1975 Tantra assembled a first group of musicians with whom they recorded their first and only Single. From this formation only the following musicians continued to the second phase; Manuel Cardoso (Electric Guitar), Armando Gama (Keyboards) and Am�rico Luis (Bass). It�s when T� Z� Almeida joins the band, as fulltime drummer, that the real original formation of Tantra comes together.
In 1977 �s winter the band gives it�s first concert in CineTeatro da Encarna��o in what was to be a memorable night for the band and the public. Everyone in the audience, including the media, was ecstatic with the bands music. From that concert�s two track tape, remastered, the cd "Live Ritual" was edited. Soon the band was established as the main rock group in Portugal. The band then recorded "Mist�rios e Maravilhas" (1978), the band�s first album, that did bring them to public as the only Portuguese Sinfonic Rock group to be able to put out records and back them up with live concerts all over the country with original music and portuguese lyrics.
After a while Armando Gama left the band and was replaced, temporarely, by Pedro Mestre. The reason for this was that the soon to be Tantra�s keyboard player Pedro Luis still had some concerts to do with his own jazz group and so the band needed a keyboardist for their live gigs. Before he left the band Pedro Mestre composed a music for the band, "JI", that was most welcome due to it�s quality and empaty with the bands spirit.
After around one year of packed live gigs all over Portugal and hard weekly rehearsals dedicated to composing new musics, the band went into studio, already with Pedro Luis on keyboards, and the colaboration of Pedro Mestre and Tony Moura, to finally record their second album "Holocausto" which was an instant success both with the press and the public. It even received a best record of the year award.
Again, about one year of live concerts, now with the colaboration of Tony Moura, an experienced guitar player, that helped with the guitars that Manuel Cardoso could not play when involved with the stage teatrical scenes that ocasionally came up during the show.
After these two records, with portuguese lyrics, the band decided to make a return to the roots and do an album sung in english with a Rock Sinfonic / New Wave feeling: "Humanoid Flesh" this album really worked out great live, throughout the 1980/1981�s Tour, with the public responding well to the music, but was not played on the radio and had bad critics on behalf of it�s lyrics being in english and on moving away from the Sinfonic Progressive musical line. This reaction to a natural creative mood and evolution, as the band saw it, created an unconfortable feeling in the band towards this state of things. After all, it was Tantra, the group that had started (in it�s generation) the Portuguese Rock revolution, the first to be successfull playing their own original, portuguese sung, Portuguese Rock! The group that, for years, had defended Portuguese language live and in studio was being pointed out for singing in english. The year was 1981, and the band decided to suspend it�s existence!

Like so many things in Portugal during the 70�s, the innovative ideas tended to take some time until completely being absorbed by a country just in a transition phase to democracy after a long period of dictatorship. Even if until the date of this release there were already some edited Progressive albums here, it was Holocausto that finally captured the whole soul of this most established musical art form. After a well succeeded first album - Mist�rios e Maravilhas, the band Tantra, driven by a growing fan bases and a steadily (at least at this time) cult prog scene, presented the fans with a mature and representative album. One that featured all the teachings and overgrown pretentious savvy (in the usual progressive good sense) of several years developing their own style while not disregarding the Monster bands of the genre.
Tantra was also noticed by this time for their exclusive Live acts, where a fantastic scenic show was designed and unfolded to better serve the complex theatrical music they were playing. This, taking advantage of the success that both Genesis and Nektar have had in their mythical concerts in Portugal, some years before.
The music in Holocausto show us a band with a specific own style, while sipping allusions from Genesis, early King Crimson and Yes and even Ange. To that learned base, they added an extra load of complexity, hard arrangements, odd-time rhythm changes and a very peculiar and innovative (for that time) sense of melody.
By all this I mean that Holocausto is a feast in bizarre, even for the 70�s, Symphonic Prog. Apparently the band wasn�t trying to be melodic or generous to the fans ears, as they kept challenging the usual structures with tons of Keyboard mayhem aiming jazzy textures imprisoned inside a Sympho capsule. Also the guitar/bass duels were adding wicked turns and changes in the �normal� procedures and the bizarre vocals were almost off-topic.
Listening to this music now, more than 20 years later, a kind of nostalgic feeling (for the time has been cruel on this record, making it sound dated) is mixed with the perplexity of finding so much common yet tangent and even perpendicular sounds to the mainstream 70�s Sympho. This was kind of a challenging effort by the band, exploring new venues while maintaining basic traces of their masters.
What is most defying here is the curious melodic lines that completely disregard calmness and obvious harmony while substituting it with complex and dark/hard toned structures. All in all, this is a very difficult album to understand and to like at first listen. It is courageous, bold and everything but short-minded. And it can be a real challenge even for the experienced progger.
Later, the band, driven by a complete change in scenery, abandoned this (so hard to construct) style, selling out to new paths that lead them nowhere (I�m talking about the third chapter - Humanoid Flesh). This meant the end of the line for Manuel Cardoso�s Tantra.
Now, maybe driven by the "progressive rebirth" phenomenon that the Internet has provided, a second chance has been set and Tantra has taken the risk of this new challenge, as they prepare to release a new, back to the Sympho Prog roots, album. If you understand that in Portugal, Tantra is the synonym for Symphonic Prog, you can obviously guess my euphoria while I wait to get my hands (and ears) in their 2003 chapter.
