So now I select my pencil tool and select a bright line color. Black can be hard to see so I use a color I can see well. We'll change it to black later. I chose a line weight of 1.75. I then cheat, er I mean, trace the eyes and eye brows at their original size. At this point I've decided to add the few nose lines but I don't draw in the bottom of his nose. It should be exaggerated a bit so I'll save that for a later step. I then use the paintbrush tool and add the pupils. Don't forget to save, save and save again!!!! Make that a routine!
Now, I'm satisfied with the lines (I constantly hide and unhide the photo layer to check to see how the lines are looking) so at this point I select them and change them to black. I then use the free transform tool (lock the pencil layer and unlock the photo layer each time you alter the photo)and stretch the photo to enlarge the bottom of the nose. I center it where it looks right and I lock the photo layer and draw in the nose on the pencil layer.
Again I hide and unhide the photo layer and keep checking the overall look before I continue. *IMPORTANT!* If at any time you think it just doesn't look right, this is the time to change it! Strectch or shrink the photo until you think it looks right! This is where practice will prevail!
So now I've decided that the mouth and chin will work fine at this size but I'll wait to do the face shape. Also, I noticed I forgot to add a bag under one eye! Oops, so I threw one in! I always use the orange line color but change it to black once it looks right.
Now I stretch the photo height wise and narrowed the width. I'm thinking that the double chin look may not work well at this point but I'll change it later if I have to. I draw in the shape of the face just up to the tip of the sideburns. I stopped there because I want his forehead to be a bit bigger which means another stretch of the photo. I'll do that after.
